 Wood in tank

I’m currently working on a vivarium to house my barking tree frogs. I think I’ve decided on a basic design/layout, but I have a few questions. What type of wood have you used? On line I’ve read about cypress being a really good choice, but I was wonderng what else would work. I live on the bank of Lake Ontario, and as such I have LOTS of driftwood. Would that work?

Also for those that have made a tank with a false/raised floor would terra cotta pots work as the supports or should I go with the PVC?

Driftwood is a great (cheap!) wood to use, you will need to bake it though to kill anything on it.

Be prepared that you will get some fuzzy mold as the tank "takes over" the piece of wood, it’s totally normal. No one told me and I kinda freaked!

Mopani is also a good wet wood.

I use bamboo in my Tree Frog and Gecko tanks. It works well for me, it resists mold/rot, is lightweight, and is very smooth, my frogs and geckos love it!

Willows are ideal and apple... no cherry or fir wood like cedar or pine..

Mopani is my favorite for its two tone look and bulk..also very smooth for frogs. Mopani can be purchased at acquarium supply stores...

I use driftwood too.... Most driftwood is great but as Rrragdoll stated must be cleaned. If you can’t bake soak in super hot water with a little vinegar ...not alot just enough to kill any eggs..so a cup to a bathtub full.... If only a sink 1/3 cup is plenty... The vinegar is optional as hot hot water should do it.
Just insure you rinse well... air dry well...must be dry to kill any bacteria issues...it takes quite a long time to dry depending on pce.

If you purchase any wood I would still sterilize it by oven or water....

Some silicone any holes in the wood too so crix etc cannot get in it... Good idea for the large driftwood type pces as this is definately the down fall on chunky pces... Insure the silicone is acquarium type...It will say on the tube if safe for acquariums and is sold everywhere inlcuding pet shops, cheaper at hardware stores...

Nytedragon - where do you get the bamboo from?

Thanks for all the responses!

My girlfriends father grows tons of Bamboo... I never thought it would live in my area, but he has a place on the lake where it thrives!

I just cut what I need, let it dry out, then bake it in the oven....

If you use Bamboo, watch how you cut it.. bamboo has hollow sections, you have to cut at the joints to make sure that it is sealed so crickets and things can’t get inside the hollow sections....
