 Thinking about getting another whites....

Hey everyone,

Sence my last whites, Melon passed away almost five months ago now, I feel that I may be ready to get myself another whites. Or maybe even two....

I want to ask this; can someone tell me EVERYTHING that a whites will need in their cage. I don’t want anything to go wrong, I want everything to go perfect! Tellme what every dumpty’s dream cage would have in it.... :)
I heard that most people on here are using bed-a-beast. Can I too use this?

My last dumpty died due to a swelling on his back lgs, and he would not eat. I think he may have been sick when we got him, I don’t know....

When I do end up getting another froggie, I think I may purchase him at Petco.... this is the only place to get whites were I live....

Thanks!!

Emma

Ok, start out with a 20 gal tall for one wtf, for 2 you will need a 30 gal tall.

Put a layer of gravel (aquarium gravel) rinsed well on the bottom. Approximately 1 inch to 2 inch deep.
Next put a layer of Eco Earth or Bed a Beast on top of the gravel. Approximately 2 to 3 inches deep. With your hand pack down the Eco Earth/bed a beast so it will stick together and not stick to your frog.

If you would like to plant live plants I suggest pothos they are very easy to grow and grow fairly quickly.
Be sure to rinse them well, both sides of leaves and roots, this is to get rid of any fertilizer or pesticides. You can just stick them in the Eco earth/Bed a beast and they will grow.

Either buy or find some thick branches to go across and diagonal in the tank for climbing. If you find them bake them in the oven at 350 for 20 to 30 minutes, that will take care of any insects that could be in them.
I like to pull the bark off the branches before baking, I think they are a lot smoother on the frogs skin and they look nicer. Make sure the branches you find are not from an area they may have been sprayed for bugs.

If you end up getting two frogs make sure your water dish is big enough for them both to sit in. I find mine like to sit together in the water sometimes. I know you know from before treat your water or use bottled water. Make sure the water is not to deep for them. You can also put a rock in the dish for them to sit on.

Most important, get gauges for the temp and humidity, let the tank sit for a week or 2 to make sure you have the right temp and humidity. Temp day time should be 80 to 82. It can vary a little. Night time temp should be 70 to 75. Again that can vary a little.
Humidity should be between 50 to 60.

If you are going to buy 2 frogs, try and buy them at the same time from the same place so you won’t have to quarantine them from each other.

Some people like to set up a small tank, before putting them in the big tank, to watch them closely when they first get them. If you want to do that, and they are babies. Set up a 10 gal. with plain white paper towels on the bottom, put a couple of hides and a branch in there for them. You can watch their progress a little easier this way. You can see how much they are eating and you can see their pooh better to make sure it is normal. You will still need some type of heat for them. For babies I like to try and keep temp around 85 day and night.
For either tank make sure you have a warm side and a cool side. Water being on the cool side.

Also remember these are pets, but not pets to handle and play with. Only handle when you need to. Like for taking pics or cleaning the tank, and to inspect them. Be sure to wash and rinse hands well before handling, and your hands should be damp.

Ok, I’m getting tired now, if I left anything out, please someone help me out. lol

Let us know, what you end up doing Emma.

Thanks so much whitie!!

I don’t think you left anything out... ;)

I have a question; do they need an light. If so, can it just be an reagular house bulb, or do they NEED a UVB light?
Please don’t tell me the spefic type and everything, I get so confused! :)

I am planning to buy some drift wood from petco or somthing, but if I find a really cool thick branch that I like outside than I will use this instead

I may be only getting one whites, for right now...
The whites at petco are around 9 or so months. They have, I liknk, four in stock.

What does a good healthy whites look like? I want to make sure to pick the right one! :)

Thanks again!!

As far as lighting goes white’s don’t NEED lights, however a 60 watt bulb does help with day time temps the only reason to use a uvb bulb with white’s is if you have live plants, and to be save just use a 2.0 bulb stick with 20 watt or lower to be safe.
A healthy white’s will be a good round size no bones showing, no discoloration on the skin check the belly and the legs especially make sure there are no sores etc. they will be fairly active a lot of times in pet stores the frogs will be asleep on the back of the tank, this is a good sign it’s true, not all white’s climb, but not climbing can possibly indicate sickness too. it take experience to really know the difference in some cases Hope I haven’t left anything major out, but I am short on time.

Yes, you will need a light. Not only for heat but to simulate day and night. The light should be on 12 hrs, off 12 hrs. No specially lighting is needed. You can use a normal light bulb. Depending on how big your tank is, will determine what wattage to use. You might have to experiment with a couple different bulbs to get the right temp. That is why you should set your tank up before getting your frog and watch to see how the gauges read, day and night for at least a week.

I have 3 different bulbs on my tank, but it is a 55 gal long, so there is a lot more space to heat. Also my house is a block house so it stays cool. I have a kitchen light (like you would see used over a kitchen sink) Florescent long tube type, that lays on top of the tank for my plants, it doesn’t give off much heat, but is great for plants. You want to make sure the light is blocked a little with live plants or fake, so the frogs are not sitting right under the bright light. I use a moon light and a red heat light at night to keep temps up a little and I can see in the tank to watch the frogs hunt.

Be sure to get the gauges, first! You can get the less expensive ones at Walmart in the hardware department.
Make sure you wash and clean/bake everything. NO SHORT CUTS!

As far as a healthy looking frog, look at it closely. Make sure there are no sores, no discoloring. Look at the stomach and the under neath part of the legs. They should be a little pink, but not red. If the frog struggles to get away that is a good sign too. Although wtfs are fairly calm frogs you want it to resist you a little to see that it is strong. This may help you but it does not guarantee a healthy frog.

When you get the frog home, put it in the tank and leave it alone. Throw in 3 to 4 crickets. Sit back and look at it from afar. Give it some privacy by covering 3 sides of the tank with paper, trash bag, or aquarium back ground. Don’t be getting into the tank for anything but to replace the water and feeding.

I hoped this helped, I answered you in a hurry I am home on my lunch break, I will ck in later this evening.

Either type of meter/gauge type work I prefer digital because of my vision and you can put those on the outside of the tank so they are closer to read as digital hydrometers thermometers usually have a wire probe that goes into the tank, the circle gauges usually attach to the tank wall inside, so are usually located a distance away, so if you have good vision those are ok. so either type get the job done, also the circle gauges are most likely cheaper unless you get digital ones from say walmart or something as any digital thermometer and hydrometer will work. though if you go digital, i’d get the ones designed for pets for best results.
