Bumps on legs harmful ?!!?!? HELP

Hey guys,

I’ve been really concerned lately about Duke’s right hindleg because compared to his left one, it has these weird bumps that the other leg doesn’t. He eats normal, poops normal, and bathes regularly.
What started out as one single bump like couple months ago, has become several, not really HUGE hard bumps, but some parts of the skin on the hindleg is a bit transparent and if you moved the skin, you can see things underneath.

Does anybody know if this is some sort of White’s dumpy tree frog disease?
or is it just a bacterial infection?
Can i use that melee fix thing to cure him?
I’m trying to find a nearby amphibean vet of somekind to get a checkup.
i’ll post a picture soon, but my camera’s kind of broken.

I just moved him into an 18x18x24 Exoterra...
i feed him outside his tank, he has lighting for 12 hours a day, clean water to bathe in,
he has crickets every 2-3 days because hes about 3 1/2 inch long.

I’m really scared, i don’t want to lose him.
I just bought a new friend for him that i will soon put into the thank with him later after Sumo gets his quarantine.

However, if his bumps get worse, i will not.

PLEASE HELP if you know whats causing this or if its life threatening.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Bumps on legs harmful ?!!?!? HELP

Lisa,

If there is something in the lump I would say it is probably tape worms. WTF get tape worms that come up in blister/lump things on the surface of the skin. Sometimes they rupture and the worms come out. A Herp vet would be great becasue the only parasite treatment for this kind of worm is by prescription only and usually they administer it by injection. Invermectin or something like that is it’s name I believe.

OK now I will tell you what I did for my frog................ My little Irwin came to me riddled with parasite. I used the fenbendazole and it seemed to clear up and every few months it would flare up again. So I began to thing it was possibly a form of a tape worm. I am nowhere near a herp vet living in the mountains. So I went back to a human treatment that I know was tried and true.......... Garlic. So I got the garlic powder and dusted one of his 3 crickets like I do with the calcium powder. I dusted the first and hand feed it to him. Then gave him 2 or 3 more undusted ones. I did this for three days in a row. Since then no problems at all.
He hated the garlic and would actually sit for a few seconds with his tongue hanging out!!! Very cute but it seemed to work.

Now a herp vet if available and afforable is best. But this is an option.
Just a quick question is there any odour to his waste? Usually wiht parasite, but not always with tape worms there is a strong odour.
The mela fix dip will not hurt him and is worth a try too, especially if it is not parasite. But if you can see things under the skin it sure sounds like parasites.

Sometimes vets will inject the med right into the lump of worms and sometimes it will open up and then they will irrigate to help flush the worms and keep the area clean to avoid infection.
Sometimes it doesn’t get that bad and the injection just kills them off and the body eliminates them.

Keep your new guy seperate from Duke until you get this sorted out. Do not even cross contaminate the crickets. Lots of parasites are carried by the crickets.

Bumps on legs harmful ?!!?!? HELP

Woah, tapeworms huh?
hmm maybe, i’ll check on his leg more next time. Its hard to get him to not move when i stretch his legs out because it irritates him so he just hops away or sits and tucks his legs back.

i found a close by vet that treats reptiles and frogs, its only about 5 miles away, so i think i can get him checked up, it’ll be more convienent since its so close,i’m sure my mom will take me...

hopefully i can get it fixed...i’ll try that garlic method you told me.

Question: cross contaminate? What do you mean? I feed them both the same crickets that i get from ;petsmart, i order bout 25-30 crickets and they just sit in a critter plastic bin.

Question 2: garlic powder? hmm, so i feed him 3 days in a row? cuz mine probably wont eat 2-3 crickets 3 days in a row, maybe 1 or 2... but hes a 3 1/2 inch, so i guess he doesnt need to eat as much...

thanks for all your help, i will try it and keep you updated!

OH and, no i haven’t smelled any kind of strong odor.
its just moderate i guess.

OK take a closer look if you can...........
Odour there should be no odour at all with their waste................

Yes just the real fine garlic your Mum uses in cooking.
Just dip the cricket’s head in it and feed it to the frog.
If they don’t usually eat daily just give them one or two but make it three days in a row...........

Cross contaiminate:- You should be using seperate feeding dishes for the frogs if you outside feed......
If the frogs do not eat all the crickets you put in for them do not put them back in with your main group of crickets. You need to kill them or you need to have 2 seperate crickets keeper, one for each frog’s crickets.
OK call the herp vet and see what you are up against because a check up can cost between $60 and $100

good luck

Yah i got a closer look, but there doesn’t seem to be anything moving around in his legs.
the bumps aren’t hard either, just squishy-ish, also his leg is the same size as the other normal one.

I’ll see if we have any garlic powder, if not we’ll just buy some.

Okay, well if they don’t finish the crickets, i’ll probablyt just toss em outside i guess, since i don’t think i can just kill the crickets... lol
yeah

wow, 60-100?
Ouch, well hopefully it’ll be 50 ish, but i’ll do wahtever it takes to make him better.
thanks again,
i hope Duke will be better!

My first thought was a tape worm as well....

Usually with parasites there is signs of them by way of waste odour but it seems if tape worms then they don’t get this so much... Ivermectin seems to be the drug of choice by vets for the tape worms as Froggy and Gribbit have said... Tape worms are extremely difficult to rid....

The other thing you can try is the mela fix.... If its not tape worms as nothing is moving inside then it will be bacterial which in turn turns to fungal which is the change of skin structure.... If you do the garlic insure you space using anything else with a week inbetween.... If you keep us informed I sometimes reccomend an earlier intervention but only in some cases as frogs kidneys are of concern....

If you go to the vet they may give you an all round parasite and antibiotic mix like
Metronidazole/ (Flagyl).... this has not been found to work on tape worms though only nemetodes etc...
If you do go try to take some waste with you in a sterile container... It may not help but it may be enough to get under a microscope..

Sick tank:
Insure your temps are up to the 85f range to help healing. Also when they show any signs of illness doesn’t matter the kind they should be placed in a sterile type envioronment. I suggest a temporary tank/sick tank can be small (like a 10 gal).... Paper towel substrate and a cave and maybe a silk plant. All washable...low humidity say 30-40 range. darken sides of tank with either books or taped on paper etc...
This stops reinfection or...

Can’t say for sure if it will or won’t... Just try it as you have nothing to lose. Its all natural so is safe to use..

Once you start it you must finish the treatment as its like any antibiotic...

You won’t see results until the treatment is completed in some cases. You may notice the leg swelling go down etc... Just depends if its tape worms or not and if caught early enough etc....

If it doesn’t work then you can try something else...
