 Can’t find treefrog

I bought a green treefrog yesterday. I have an 18x18x24 exo terra terrarium for him. I haven’t been able to find him in my tank after a few hours of having him. Is there a possibility he buried himself somewhere? Where else can I look? Also, he has a darkened throat. I’m guessing that means he is a male, right?

Never mind. I found my treefrog. He was hiding behind the styrofoam where the cords go. It took me all day to find him and I never would have looked unless I saw a cricket crawl behind there. Does anyone know a way to close that up?

glad you found him!!! They are expert hiders aren’t they??? So many times I have nearly had a heart attack looking for my frogs........... 2 days ago my youngest daughter (6yo) left the door fo the tank open while she cleaned and changed the h2o bowl. Then she was distracted as she put things back together. Turns out the door was open for about an hour and fortunately neither froggie decided to go explore the world!!!

I have the exo tanks and I stuffed paper towel in the holes at the bottom tight..... This helps keep crix out too and is safe....

If your using dirt substrate then put rocks stuffed in there and then the dirt....

Glad you found him.. :) I know that feeling all too well...

I have big eyed treefrogs that are tiny... One is only 1/2 inch and I couldn’t find him....

I stripped the tank over 2 hours and still couldn’t find him. It turned out he had hidden in the leg of a ceramic pot shaped like a pagoda. The legs hollow.
I was lucky as it was only by flashlight that I knew he was there..... I was terrified after that so that pagoda pot went back into storage..hahaha!

I also had to change the substrate to papertowel with dishes of soil so I could see them. I was terrified of squishing them when changing water etc.....ahhh the joys of frog ownership..hahaha!

Here’s a pic of one of them...tiny tiny...

Awww. It’s so cute. ♥ I’m glad you found him. Good luck on being able to keep up with him.
I do freak out a bit as well when I can’t find my treefrog.

Do you think I should get a companion for him?

Most are quite happy alone...

If you do decide to get another, you will need to quarantine the new one to insure its disease free. You use a sick tank set up for 30+ days depending if eating, normal etc...

I use a small tank like a 10 gallon with just a desk lamp with a red bulb or infrared bulb 24/7...a little water dish, plant and cave...
Its also a good way to grow one smaller if you like a particular baby one but its half the size of your other..

Don’t forget to check your tank is big enough to house two frogs instead of the one...

Your tank is plenty big for more greens (33 gals) but make sure you quarantine. I guess if you got more like today from the same place, same cage (and they didn’t add any) that it may slide, but quarantining is always best.

Also make sure that you factor in food costs and cleaning. If you’re using a live setup then there is less cleaning besides fresh water, on paper towel there is more daily stuff.

I got to the point that it was cheaper to buy crickets online, even though I get way more than I need. It saves time and gas from having to go to the store and is really convenient to just grab them out of the basement as needed. No more "crap, I forgot to pick up crickets"! Also it gave me an excuse to get more animals, since you don’t want to waste the extra crickets!

$20 for 1000 crickets, shipped to your door. LLLreptile.com I buy 1/2" for my adult RETFs, when they stay cool they don’t get much bigger. last for around 6 weeks. If your frogs are smaller you can get whatever size you need.

For the gap you can also jam some moss in there. But I’d try and go for a living tank. If he needed to hide behind the styro I would take a look at your tank and see if you can’t make him more secure. I would start with covering the sides and front with paper bags. After a week you can remove the front one, I’d just leave the sides up, that way it doesn’t freak him out thinking that something is coming from all sides to get him. Also make sure there are lots of places for him to hide, plants, caves etc.

Unfortunately, he was the last frog left from where I got him. I was actually surprised because he looked so healthy and fat. He is always bright green and gorgeous. I heard him call this morning at around 9 something. He woke me up. But it didn’t sound like a frog at all. I just couldn’t think of what else it could have possibly been, so it had to have been him.

I have a live setup. I also have a waterfall with a filter/pump, so I don’t have to change their water, just add new water often since the level goes down so fast. My humidity also always stays really high, so I don’t have to mist as much. But I still do because I love watching his reaction. He always thinks it’s raining.

I breed crickets, so I don’t have to buy them. But it hasn’t been very successful. If I ever run low on crickets, I will keep that site in mind. It sounds like a good deal compared to $.10 per cricket.

I have TONS of plants and vines in my tank. I think he just liked being squished in a cozy, humid, hot hole the first day. He probably wanted to hide from me too. He likes sitting on top of the wall now. It seems like he’s always more yellow than green. He’s so cute. I put squared wood pieces cut to size to keep those sneaky crickets from going back there. Do your frogs ever actually go in the caves you provide them? He never goes in mine.

My red eyes just like the dense foliage. They lay above and under the leaves.

There is a site that has their calls on it though I can’t seem to find it right now.
