Now if you don’t need water under the whole thing you can just use a drainage layer system which is easier. You can still have the water area. You would just use the gravel or leca (hydroton clay ball) and fill the bottom of the tank with it, holding back an area for your water area, using large wood pieces or rocks. That way the water flows under the whole thing but you don’t have to construct and cut the eggcrate. You then use either vinyl screen or landscape paper on top of the gravel, then several inches of soil. You don’t want the water to go within 1/2" of the screen or paper otherwise it will wick up into your soil and create a swamp. A good beginner filter/pump is the Tetra reptofilter, you just sit it in a couple inches of water and it flows out the top, removable filters, and just stack rock around it. Seriously check out dendroboard tank building/setups area. |

Basically you just sit it in the tank and you can stack rock, wood or whatever around it. Just make sure you can get to the top easily to change out the filters. You can silicone the rocks so that they don’t move so much if you need to. Link |
