 HURT FROGGY HAND...NEED HELP/ADVICE!

I have posted about my American Tree Frog, Lenny on the frog forum as well, but it was suggested that I post here as well. I have a pic of Lenny’s hand. To make a long story short, Lenny had a bad finger when I brought him home, it fell off, his arm completely swelled, I soaked him in warm water every so often, swelling went down...and now his hand is looking pretty grim. PLEASE HELP!! Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you don’t have a vet close try this. Follow these instructions to the T.

You need to put this frog in a tank with paper towel as substrate,a water dish,a hide and something to climb on. Raise the temps to 82-85F. Keep the water dish clean.

One of the members on this forum (Hoppy), has been nice enough to share this with us.
Please start this treatment ASAP, you don’t want infection to start in.
Good Luck

Mela Fix instructions.....

This is the instructions for using Mela fix....It can be purchased at any /fish/pet shop in the fish supply section and some walmarts..... Its also available on line...

Please only use this once talking to other experienced keepers.....Its not a cure all...

Its an antibacterial and works as a natural antibiotic and anti-fungul... It does help with some parasites but not all..
If things are caught early it can do wonders....

Mela Fix use instructions

Mela - fix

Its an all natural medicine (made with tee tree oil).

You use it at 1/2 the dosage on the bottle (that goes for any meds for the frogs that are meant for fish).
Its very strong.

1) I measured 4 ounzes of de-chlorinated/treated water.
2) I warmed it in the microwave for 15 sec., just to barely warm it. (use a ceramic dish)
3) Then I took a toothpik and dipped it in the mela-fix twice and stirred the water. You should just be able to smell it in the water.
4) Then I got my frog and made him sit in for only 1 minute.
5) Then hold him to dry and place back in his tank.

Repeat this for 7 days.

This can be repeated only after a 2 week break in between.

Also if frog is small tip some water away after adding Mela Fix... They should be able to sit comfortably..

The frog should be dipped when quiet and at the same time each day or close to....The less stress the better...

But please print off for your files.

His hand was not like this at the store...he had a bad toes that was basically hanging my a string. A couple days later, his toe fell off, and his arm swelled up. I kept soaking him in warm water ever once in a while, and swelling went down, but the hand looked like this.

If you don’t get it an antibiotic or try the mela fix soon, your frog will get an infection. If it gets infected then you will have to take it to the vet or risk losing it.

Did you put this frog in a tank with paper towel and get the temps up? Soaking in warm water is not going to help. You need to act fast!!!

Yes, I have paper towel substrate, and I bought mela-fix. I was just replying to Rock Master about his question. Thanks for the mela-fix directions, they’re very helpful.

Thanks Whitie.....

Insure your humidity is low as bacterial risk is high.... You really only want him to dip... say 30 to 40%...

Water must be treated with drops and changed each am after his night swims......

Sick tank environment is a must all washable etc.... Leave life plants out or anything else that might have a risk factor for dirt or small particles.. This includes some silk plants that have fuzzy type materials.. Just silk leaves best...

You may find using a silver sulfadiazine cream (burn ointment) helpful for a wound of this size. It can be purchased at any pharmacy.. after his dips placing the cream on can help skin growth and cleanliness...

Keep us posted...

 HURT FROGGY HAND...NEED HELP/ADVICE!

Thanks for added suggestions. Today is the 5th day of treating him with Mela-fix. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any improvement in the little guy’s hand. However, it doesn’t seem to be getting any worse, and it looks like it’s bothering him less. He used to just sit in one place all day, all night. Now, he’ll jump after crickets and climb to his favorite parts of the tank. At least his morale is improving. Hopefully, his hand will follow suit. I’ll definitely have to check out the burn ointment and see if that helps. Thanks again, everyone!

Today, I’m finally starting to see some improvement! Lenny’s hand is no longer red. New skin growth is beginning to appear, and he’s as active as ever!

LOL ...Glad you updated as I was just about to say that you won’t notice differences until treatment is over normally...

Just insure even after the treatments are done that his water and tank is clean clean... till completely healed..

I would suggest if slow healing that in another week do the dips again... can’t hurt.. If not it should just heal now but watch too much humidity etc...

Good luck..Keep me posted
