Can you show a pic of your tank and your frog? That will make it easier for us to help you.
If not tell us everything you have in the tank.

My camera will not work lol so I can not post a picture of the tank, but its a 5.5 gallon it has a tree in the middle, 2 water dishes because one came with the starter kit, and I think the brand name for the substrate is bed a beast

I’ve never had one of these frogs, but since it’s a new guy he’s probably stressed, and a good way to help is by providing good hiding places (plants/caves), and also covering the outside of three sides of the tank, it’ll help him feel more secure. You can do this with special tank backgrounds or just with paper taped to the outside glass. As for the temp/humidity problem, I’m guessing you have a heat lamp, which is good for providing heat but does dry the substrate...you could get an undertank heater, or mist the tank a lot, and some people have success by covering part of the tank lid with a towel or something (just be careful because I don’t know how to do it safely with the heat lamp on top).

Hopefully this helps a little, try to give it time to settle in. And other members should be posting soon (members who actually own tree frogs, unlike me lol)

Now there is something seriously wrong, I think Petsmart sold him to me sick because the humidity is above 60% and the temperature is 82 degrees and he is suppost to be bright green but he is black, not dark brown, black, and instead of a white stripe going around his whole body, the stripe is yellow. When it got into the container to take him home at the pet store he jumped right out and kept trying to run away, we barely could catch him...... he looked and behaved healthy in the pet store, but I do not know whats wrong with him now.... I do not want him to die....

I really hope some more people come on soon to help...I just looked at some caresheets that said these frogs do well at room temp (around 70-77 degrees F), so maybe it’s too hot? Try getting rid of the heat lamp if that’s what you’ve been using, darken/cover the sides of the tank if you haven’t already, and see if in a while he’ll perk up a little bit.
Unfortunately that’s the best I could come up with right now, hopefully some experienced members will get online soon.

In my opinion, a 5.5 gallon is too small. Tree frogs are arboreal, hence the name TREE frog. I think you need a ten gallon densely covered in plants and some things to hide in or under. I would also recommend you get some large suction cups and some cork bark. Then, you can stick some cork bark on the tank walls.(They like o hang out on these) Also, an exo-terra fake vine works very well. I think if you provide him with lots of stuff to climb and hide in, then he should be just fine.

I’ve never got a sick pet from petsmart, so I doubt they sold it to you sick. You don’t need the light. These frogs are best at room temperature. the humidity s perfect, so keep it up. Just give him a few days.

I agree, they say 10 gallons per frog, so get that guy out of the apartment and give him a house. Tree frogs are not a very hearty frog, they are very picky, if you do not have the tank right they will not adapt, you have to adapt to them. Like ammerastu said, give him a bigger home, more plants and vines. are you turning the lights off at night? They are noctournal, i have seen that mistake many times, owners dont want to turn the lights off so they can see them well they need the dark, so put a low watt red light in there for night time veiwing, they cannot see the light but you can see them. everybodys happy!! :) Make sure its low watts though cuz you want the temp to drop at night.

hope this helps.

I also think we are forgetting that burrowing is natural behavor. His dark coloring I beleive is do to cage size and lack of hiding spaces. so he is trying to burrow to get away from it. temps need to go down a little, UVB IS NOT something you need but might get some natural behavor in him.
!!!!ALSO!!!! Get a background for your tank. put it on three sides and this will reduce stress tons.(you can get these at any pets mart or petco), probably needs more climbing places, HAVE YOU FED HIM? if not sometimes if relly hungry they will burrow and go to sleep (kinda like hybernating)
And as the post above me states... Those purple reptile lamps are made turn on breeding behavor at night and may bump up the activity level of the frog.
ANOTHER THING... TTHEY ARE MOSTLY NOCTURNAL THEY WILL BE HIDING ALOT DURING THE DAY
and that purple lamp will help you see him climbing around at night.
Good Luck! hope your frog gets better!

As said in the other post, that tank is way to small.
There is no way you can have a warm side and a cool side in that small of tank.
He is probably digging down in the substrate to say cool, he is too hot. Yes, he will darken to hide in the substrate.

here is a good care sheet

was this for a reptile specifically? i think she might mean those ones especially made for reptiles with those fancy tops?

those are VERY expensive we mean a regular fish tank in the fish departmeant those are only $10 at petsmart and then another $10 for the screanlid

you could also try garage sales and places like goodwill just make sure you clean those out really well bfore you put him in there

and also... dont get petsmart on your badside, Petco bassically tortures their animals.
I could list up to thirty EXTREMELY horrible things they do. and in any tank you look in, you will always see a dead or horrible sick animal. (not to mention HOW HORRIBLE they feed and house them.
They get almost all their garters from people that just walk in with one they caught and want to get rid of (or just bassically end the snakes life to get $5.)

do you handle him often?

you shouldn’t handle tree frogs very often unless cleaning the cage, changing the water bowls, etc.

he will eat on his own. they don’t eat right away like toads do.
also, don’t put in more than 3 (adult) crickets(6 pinheads).they could turn the tables and start tasting you’re frog instead.

if you are leaving that many food items in your frog’s tank over a prolonged period of time... he will become extremely stressed..

i would suggest that you do some reading on this species that you have... if you haven’t figured out that leaving more then 3-4 food items in a tank for a set amount of time can be harmful to the life of your frog...... then you should rethink owning him...

return the frog, get a proper setup in order and have it stabilized for more then a day... ( at least a month ).... and then try caring for an amphibian again..

keeping and animal is a privilege and not a right... and should be treated as such.......
