Am thinking about getting a tree frog

Well I am thinking about getting a tree frog and was just looking for a little general info on them. I rescued a Ball Python in April and that is how I have gotten into reptiles and repticzone. This site has helped a lot with my snake.

I like to do some research before I get new pets. Its only fair to the animal that I know what I am doing so it can be happy and healthy. Anyways it will be a while till I get a tree frog. I was just wondering what kind would make the best beginner frog?? I really like Red Eyed Tree frogs. I also saw pics of a blueish-greenish frog that was cute. Do they do OK living alone or do they prefer to be in groups?? How hard are they to take care of?? I’ve seen pics of people holding there frogs. Do they like to come out and be held?? Are you ever afraid that they will get away from you or are they pretty calm? I am a photographer and would definitely take pics of them both in the tank and out. Do they croak??? I LOVE listening to frogs and would love one that croaks. Are some kinds more vocal than others??? Do they have personalities?? What pet stores have good healthy frogs??? I have a pet world and a pet smart where I live. I think pet world is a little shabby at least this one is. Do you generally get your frogs at the pet store?? Anyone have any links they think I should check out?

I don’t really need info on proper husbandry yet. Right now I would just like to know what you guys think about your tree frogs and anything you care to share. I am just trying to decide if they would make a good pet for me. I will learn about husbandry if I decide I really want a tree frog and when I have decided on what kind.

Thanks for all your help

Am thinking about getting a tree frog

I will give you some info to the best of my ability. I am new at owning a tree frog. I have a white tree frog that I purchased from a pet store about 2 months ago. He is about 4-5 inches long which I believe makes him the size of an adult. I refer to him as a male because he does croak at night. I understand that the males croak for about 20 secs at a time which is what he does. The females make very little noise. I really enjoy having him as a pet. I personally do not handle mine, I just think he is happier not being handled. When I first got him I was a bit disappointed in the fact that he slept and hid all day and only came out at night. They are nocturnal and now that he is settling into our home he is getting on a routine and we are able to watch him when he comes out around 5pm. They need 12 hours dark and 12 hours daylight. They love to eat and can become obese. I have mine in a 10 gallon tank which I am changing because he should be in a minimum of 20 gallons. They say 20 gallons for the first frog and then add 10 gallons for any other frog you add. I plan on purchasing an exo-terra terrarium and then I will add another white tree frog. This is a great forum that has helped me alot in taking care of him. The white tree frog is a great "first" frog they are hardy and adapt fairly well to their environment. You will have to monitor humidity and temp. Best of luck, keep us posted on what you decide to get. I hope this helped.

Am thinking about getting a tree frog

Thank you!!!! Right now I have a 20 gallon long tank. My snaker is in it but I plan on getting him a bigger tank. Would the 20 gallon work for frogs??? it has a sliding screen top. Can I put more than one Red eyed tree frog in there?? It seems kind of a big tank for just one white. Can you keep more than one male together??? It will be several months at the least before I get anything but if and when I do I will definatly post on here.

thank you!!!!

Anyone have anything to say about RETF??

Cyndi

If your going to take the snake out and put the treefrog in clean the tank very well just incase. the 20 would work, but you have to remember screentops make it hard to keep humidity up. so you would either need to cover it slightly or change the top completely. treefrogs need room to move and jump naturally. a 20 gal. is basically the minimum for one frog. its because to many frogs in one tank make it difficult for them to get there own space. its like putting 2 people in one 4ft x 4ft room. you want more space than you think you really need. i will warn you that red eyed tree frogs can be difficult because most pet stores get them WC and they do not do very well from the change and adaptation. whites are a very hearty species of treefrogs. treefrogs in general can be kept together males and females. i have 4 whites in the same tank right now. i know its 1 female with 3 males. havent been able to find another female :/. i am glad your doing your research beforehand though. get the tank setup before you get the frogs so you can check on temps and humidity as well. how would you like it if you had to move out of your house (the petstore) and come to your new home and it just have the framing up? have his new home built and steady before you get him. it will make it a lot easier on the move from the petstore to his new home.

Thanks for your advice. Ill look into different kinds of tanks. does anyone have links to sites that sell nice frog tanks??? I would prolly only get 3 frogs but want them to be happy/healthy. Ill start checking out my local pet stores. So you think I should start with Whites?? they are a little hardier??? What is the life span of a frog??? Does anyone breed there frogs?? I dont think I would breed mine, I was just wondering.

Thank you

If your doing three whites tree frogs you need a tank thats either like a 40 gal. breeder or something taller. a lot of people use the terraiums that open in the front with two doors. check out Link. that site gives pretty good items. you can check other sites for better deals or cheaper shipping. the only thing you have to make sure of is you get one big enough. whites tree frogs are very easy to keep. you just have to make sure you keep food available. they do eat a lot and can become obese if you feed them to much. i think on average most herps live around 20 yrs. some things live longer like a tortoise some live shorter. its all about the care you give them and how well you take care of them in general. the better the care the better lifespan they will have. not quite sure on who breeds them. its difficult to breed them if you dont know what your doing. they have to be cycled and fatenned to be bred. if your not planning on breeding be careful with multiple frogs, you never know what might happen. I also suggest not getting your frogs from a petstore. go to an expo or a private breeder, or go online and get them. a lot of people sell things online. kingsnake has a fairly large base for reptiles and amphi.

good luck,
Wayne

Am thinking about getting a tree frog

Here is a web site that sells the terrariums that are designed for tree frogs. I have been doing alot of research on them lately since I plan to buy one as soon as I have all my pennies saved up. I think this place has good prices, even with shipping it seems to be a better deal then some of the other places I have checked out. The terrarium that seems most favored by owners of tree frogs is the Exo-Terra Terrarium. You may want to check it out. I plan on buying an 18X18X18 terrarium to house two white tree frogs.link

That tank is only 25.25. I would go for the next size up for 2 wtfs.

The next size up is 18X18X24, I didn’t think a few more inches on the height would make a difference. This is the largest I was able to find. Is there an exo-terra terrarium larger than this? If so can you direct me to the web site since I would be interested also. Are you saying the 18X18X18 is equivalent to 25 gallons?

I did another search and found an two exo-terra 18X18X24 and 24X18X18, I assumed the second one is a larger base instead of height. What is the equivalent to gallons, how many wtf can you house in this?

Am thinking about getting a tree frog

The ExoTerra (or ZooMed) tanks that are 18x18x24 are about 33 gals, you can find a convertor under the members area on this site.

For Whites tree frogs, 20gal for one +10 gal each additional.

For most other smaller tree frogs 20gal+5 gal each additional.

Red eyes are very boring, only awake a few hours very late at night. You could keep more than one of any of the same species in a tank as long as the room is there (see the above minimums). They will not breed unless conditions are simulated for doing so and that isn’t common without a lot of work. Just be sure that they are within about 1/2" size of each other.

Make sure that the cage is setup well ahead of time, kind of like cycling a tank for fish. Also take into account the cost of feeding crickets, it will be about a dozen or so per frog, check to see the cost at your local store.

Here is a good website with a lot of great caresheets for different species of frogs as well as general housing info as well. www.amphibiancare.com
