 RETF STRANGE BEHAVIOR, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hi, I’m new, but before you keep reading, please read my[very short]profile.

Ok, about the red eyed tf, He seems happy at night, normal heartbeat and all, but He keeps waking up all stressed out in the middle of the day! I know it seems silly, but He acts like He’s having nightmares. Please help me!

Check everything in your setup, no chemicals in the room (air fresheners, carpet stuff etc), check your water (use reptisafe or similar to make safe). Cool side/warm side. Right temps. Cover front/sides and back. They don’t need uv or lighting for that matter, just some room lights here and there.

Posts pics of the setup which will help most.

Read through this caresheet and check it against what you’re doing to start. Link

Sounds to me like there is issues in his tank... Is he climbing all over during day hours acting frantic? Some frogs will follow you on the glass trying to communicate that they want out of the tank..

All this is a sign of something wrong like others have said. If you cannot post pics can you give a write up of everything that is in his tank...

Act fast.....They succumb quickly...

 RETF STRANGE BEHAVIOR, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ok I got a lot of questions and no answers, I expected that because my first post was so short. But in general when a post is to long it scares people of and they don’t read it and I get no answers. So now I will list all that scary stuff, lol. First of all He’s in A standard 10 gallon, the tank floor is filled with A half inch of coco-husk [mind if I call it that?] and it has a water dish in the corner. Though He doesn’t get in it much, if He thinks He’s going to drown, He’s not, its A half an inch deep in spring water! I feed him calcium supplements once A week. He has plenty of sturdy plastic [clean] leaves attached to a FLUCKERS bend-a-branch. he has four leaves roughly 15" long near the top of the tank [and plays on them quite A bit, might I add!]. I have A temp gauge that reads the exact temp from EVERY RETF BOOK I’ve ever read. The humidity is fine also. He is perfectly happy at night, no abnormal activity. Buuuuuuut, He keeps opening His eyes in the middle of the day, and his heart-rate gets super fast, no, he doesn’t get up and jump around, he just sits there freaked out for a while, then calms down and goes to sleep. You may be wondering why I think is A big deal, well........I don’t, I just need somebody to tell me if this is bad, or not. And please hit that reply button, I spent 30 minutes typing this!

Well, actually, it’s not that bad. I’m just trying to find out if this is anything anyone knows about, y’know, like a symptom to some disease. If nobody’s got a clue, I’m sure It’s nothing bad. But thanks for the help, you guys!

 RETF STRANGE BEHAVIOR, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Every frog can have different personality so waking during the day could be normal. Some can be just curious. However that said there is always some concern when its day for a nocturnal creature. Some frogs like the Whites adjust to their owners schedules but not many other species do...

First using books for the temps and humidity isn’t wise... Use what members here have given you. Books get outdated very quickly and aren’t written in general by someone who keeps that specific frog.
I like the warmer side for temps especially new and young frogs so 80f to 85f for day and 70 to 75f nights...

Humidity should also be followed... being rain forest its around 70% or 60 to 70....

As for your substrate...insure you have drainage. When using any of the soil or coconut substrates (exo earth). Drainage stops mold and bacteria etc building up in such a humid envioronment...

You also mentioned calcium.... How are you giving it by dusting crix? Is he eating then?

Signs of illness usually show in appetite first so if eating then he is most likely ok....But if temps or anything arn’t in line you should change them even if eating or you risk illness or hibernation etc or loss of appetite. The frog awake or climbing day could be looking for heat etc... So please review..

Questions are because without knowing proper temps humidity and if the frog is new its hard to answer if there is reason for concern or if you are new to the hobby etc.... All these things play part in their care.

It is interesting that it happens when you are looking at them. I have red eyes and they will do that if you bother them, open the cage, move things around, tap on the tank. You need to have ALOT of cover in there tank. Also covering the sides, back and even the front (the front cover can be eventually removed when they’ve settled in) will help. I just use paper bags taped up. You really just need to leave them be as hard as that can be. They stress very easily and many die within the first couple weeks because of it.

You will also find that you need some gravel under the EcoEarth, about 1/2" and then at least 2" of Eco Earth otherwise there is not enough to hold moisture, 1/2" of soil is not enough you may as well use paper towel. Be careful also with such a small tank (which is fine for babies) but they can get too hot really fast using heat. Also for babies you need to have a tight temp range, 80-85 day and no lower than 75 at night.

Again a picture would be best.
