 GTF’s Fighting????

I have a GTF that was barking constantly(by constantly I mean I hear him every day and almost every night). So I got another one thinking maybe he needed a companion. The first day he runs up to the new one(a larger one too) and starts barking at him. The new guy turns brown and hides in the bottom corner of the tank! This is a large tank (30gl tall) with lots of branches and plants so they aren’t crowded. Are these guys territorial? Is my old guy a dominant male or something? I feel terrible for the frightened new guy!

Frankly, I don’t know what to do, I just posted this to bump your post to the top where people can see it. Good luck!

 GTF’s Fighting????

I have two grey tree frogs. One male, one female. My male croaks sometimes, only when he’s feeling frisky because he’ll start trying to mount on the female and basically goes on a piggy back ride. I’m not sure if they’re territorial or not, but it could be he’s just looking for a mate. What’s the temps in your enclosure? Certain temps can induce "mating season".

I wouldn’t suggest getting a female unless you want to deal with eggs and such. However, you can certainly try.

 GTF’s Fighting????

I am not too familiar with GTF either but there is usually a dominant frog in a group. It is not usually an issue if there is enough water for both. I have 2 water dishes in my tanks. And if they are fed seperately. With greys set one frog at either end of the tank and add the crickets then so that both have an oportunity to eat.
Frogs will eat one another so the rule of thumb for size difference when putting them together is 1/2in snout to vent. It is also a good idea to quarantine any new animal for 30 days in another tank before adding them to a community tank. This lets you see if the frog is sick and stops it infecting your other frogs. Ususlly the added stress from being transported and put in a new home will cause any sickness the frog may have to become aparent.
Change of season can cause a slight change in behaviour for your frog too. Or a consistant change in their tank environment. EG All of a sudden you are keeping the tank more humid than usual or temps have gone up or dropped.

Are these wild caught??

 GTF’s Fighting????

They are about the same size, the one doing the bullying is actually a little smaller. Both are captive bred.

 GTF’s Fighting????

I wouldn’t take the chance of one bullying the other into stress and not eating. I’d separate them.

Some frogs are territorial and though Gtf are not known to be its always different in captivity...

You didn’t say the length of time you had the first one but generally they will set up an area thats theirs. In the wild no matter the frog they have favorite places to dip or sit or call...

Yours was happy if croaking like he was....calling for a mate and marking territory is sign of males that are strong and healthy. ...

You can try changing the deco in your tank like moving things around so both are put in neutral territory.. Sometimes this works... It means both have to look for favorite spots. Two water dishes is vital in my opinion...

Is your new one male too? It may not change with both being male.... Even if one is shy or hidden they may settle in later but insure food is not in question. You will always have a dominant one but not bully hopefully.... The dominant is always out and seen while subordinates are hidden but can be heard croaking too...

There is one thing that should of been done before you put them together and thats quarantine. If you didn’t its wise to put this new one seperate for 30 days or more. 30 is minimal and is counted only from the time he is acting normal like eating etc.... Putting him with the other right away could cost you the loss of the other if he is carrying anything expecially where he is hiding and brown currently..

 GTF’s Fighting????

The new guy eats,he just hides all the time while the smaller one (the bully!) hangs out in the open. I see the new one at night chasing fruit flies so maybe he’s just getting used to his new surroundings. I should have quarentined him but I really didn’t have another tank.

Give it time...he may come out then later if he is out at night.... Some though never do so be aware of this. Some frogs personality is just what it is and can’t change. Hopefully he won’t be shy for you later...

Yes, you should have quarantined...no excuse really.. But whats done is done and so now you just hope for the best and do what you can to not let stress cause any issues. By being on this forum is a very good start and learn from your mistakes.. :)

If though he becomes lethargic by not eating then you must remove him to keep your other healthy.

Its wise to have a small tank or even plastic container handy 5 gal to 10 gal (10 preferred) for emergency for any keeper. And an old desk lamp that takes regular house bulbs so you can use it for heat.... Every keeper runs into problems at some time from an injury to illness....

I agree with the quarantining, you shouldn’t risk the health of your frogs.

Why is he eating ff’s? They should be eating crickets, lots of them. About the size of the distance between the frog’s eyes, and about 4-6 per frog every 2-3 days.

Here’s a good caresheet link. Greens care link
