 WTF Acting Weird

Hi there

I got my WTF last new years, and recently he has started acting a little strange.

A bit of information - He lives in (and this is a guess based on the web page as I don’t have the measurements, but it is the only one that sees to fit, and I know it is square based and about 2 ft in height...anyway) 18" x 18" x 24" Exo-terra. He is heated by a heating pad under his terrarium, and has a sufficient amount of hiding/jumping/free space. Mist him once a day, feed every other day with 3 crickets (dusted with vitamins, fed on vitamin based foods). Clean his home and "furniture" with diluted vinigar water.

For the last two weeks of August he was being looked after by a reputable pet store due to the fact that I was on vacation. They are the store I bought him from, and so I trust that they took good care of him.

Recently I was starting to get worried because he didn’t seem interested in food (after a couple days of not eating what was in his terrarium I tried to hand feed him with no luck). He wasn’t moving around very much at all, and I was worried he might actually be sleeping through entire nights.

Then he went and had one crazy party night where I heard him jumping all over the place.

Now, unfortunately, he is back to the former state. I don’t know if he came out at all last night. I took him out tonight to inspect him and see if there was anything wrong. He is still his normal green colour, and moved around the normal amount while I was handleing him. I am incredibly paranoid about red-leg, so I went back through some old photos of him to compare his current state to what he looked like back then, and he seems to have the same (vaguely) redish tint to his underside, which he has had since I got him and is therefore obviously his natural colouring.

I have no idea what to do. I leave to go out of town tomorrow for the next 3 days (I am having a roommate change/decholorinate his water and mist him). Any idea what is up with him? Do WTFs act different in different seasons? Any help is appreciated, I hope to at least start figuring this out before I leave tomorrow. If need be, I will come back early/leave late. I really don’t want anything to happen to this little guy...

Oh...one more thing - just because I figure the more information I have teh better. He’s still pooping normally, at least to my knowledge. Did it in his water bowl the other day (practically his favorite place for this particular act). Cleaned it out when I woke up and saw it. Seemed too look normal to me.

By the description you have given I would say your temps are low... uth rarely gets temps in range for these guys. Your temps should be 85f day and 75f nights with 50% to 60% humidity...

As you have seen waste I would say he must be eating which is a good sign....

I really can’t pick up anything out of the ordinary in his behavior. The young frogs are more active and when first bought they take time to settle into their new homes.... It sounds like yours is now settled. They do change from season to season. Some croak more at certain times or more active so this could be the case with fall upon us.
They will also go more lethargic as ions in the air change with the cooler weather and without higher temps in his tank this would make him seem sluggish. Some lose interest in food etc as they know hibernation is around the corner. This is another reason temps higher are needed...

A suggestion for you would be to get a tall desk lamp and put a painted normal house bulb of red or blue or infrared bulb. This would certainly help and inexpensive. The best conditions would be a day bulb and night bulb. The day would be on with uth then night just uth or with night bulb.

Its advised to have some light for night. In the wild the outside is not complete darkness it has reflection from moon and stars on water or water droplets from dew etc.. So your room should have some light for him.....This also aids in hunting if fed crix in the tank...

As for your vacation time...pet stores are not the best place to keep him from now on if you can. The major issue is that other frogs and herps arrive weekly or daily from transport. This is a major place for illness to occur to otherwise healthy specimen. Especially if care is not taken on hands from one tank to your tank etc..... chytrid is highly contagious for example.
Pet shops cut corners with food types and vitamins and heat costs... Also I have seen staff take specimens out to show others a settled in frog etc to potential customers.... Noise and well meaning people can make alot of mistakes....
Another home/friend... Or set up your tank to be self contained for that time. Its not hard to do with a little thought and expense..

I have the same problem my WTF has lost interest in food, he ignores the crickets but if i give him a mealworm he will eat it up. i have changed crickets 3 times and he may eat one but thats it. his temps have not changed from the period he was active until now. (85-87 in the day -- 77 at night) i cant explain it and no one else can either. maybe they know something we dont lol

I agree with Hoppy, it is likely that your temps are too low, they should have a warm spot in the tank and that usually increases activity. You can buy a really cheap dome clamp lamp to sit on the tank top from Walmart for $5 and then just put a standard house bulb of 40-60W in there to boost the temp on one side of the tank.

I also agree with not letting the petstore watch him. Unless you have no one that can stop by every 2-3 days to mist and water him. Petstores get all kinds of unquarantined animals in there and alot is spread through the air.

A note about your cleaning with vinegar water. The fumes from that can kill them. Unless you are taking everything out and then washing it and rinsing really well then I would not use that.

Personally I set up my tanks for minimum cleaning, I don’t tear down the cage every week or two, I just wipe down the glass and any poo I see. My tank is natural with soil and live plants. It really helps the humidity.
