 Color Issues...

I’ve only seem my WTF turn green once. About a week or two ago, she would always be light brown with some green around her legs, but now she’s a really rich brown. It’s dark, but doesn’t look anything like black. It’s a rich brown like chocolate.

She’s in a twenty long, I try to keep the humidity at 50-60, but sometimes when I go to school it goes down to 30. Temps are usually around 80.

What do you have in the tank? Can you show us a pic? Do you have a background on your tank?

I can’t get any pictures, but I’ll describe it the best I can.

It’s a 20 gallon tank with coconut fiber substrate. It has a cave, a water bowl, two live plants, I couple hanging fake plants, a vine, a ledge thing that sticks to the wall with suction cups, and a big branch thing. I have a lime green background on 3 sides of the tank,

Oh, no! I just saw in another thread that you’re supposed to diffuse the light if you have UVA/UVB. I wan’t doing that until I saw it in that thread. I took some leafy fake plants and taped them to the walls right under the light. Do you think my tree frog’s eyes are damaged?

FYI also a 20L tank is only 12" high, that is not really ideal either since now the light is way too close to the ground. What wattage is your light? If you’re using it for heat you only need a standard house bulb, maybe 40-60W, no larger, on one side of the tank.

Also you should have an inch of gravel under the substrate to prevent mold and soggyness on the bottom.

To keep the humidity up you should cover the middle 1/3 tank top (leave one third on one side for the light and the other end for some air flow.) Make sure you have a large water area for them as well.

Uh, a 20 gallon is not 12 inches tall. a 20 LONG is 12 inches tall.

It’s a 26 watt repti glo 0.5 UVB flourescent light. I’m not using it for heat. I live in a desert and the I have quite enough heat.

I have gravel on the bottom.

I just got the soil to be wetter and a bigger water dish and the humidity stays up now.

As your using dark substrate etc some frogs do stay darker....

Your only way to see if you can lighten them up is by lighter backgrounds and bright leafy plants.... It doesn’t always work but the lighter the tank the lighter the frog. Some use plain light blue backgrounds to bring out the jade coloration for example... Playing around with temps and humidity helps some...

As they are creatures of camoflauge its normal if they stay in a cave etc to be darker... When out or up high they should color change or hopefully..

I have a chocolate colored frog that I should of called cadbury..lol He is just dark all the time no matter if out or anything. He never changes color... just him.....lol

If this is a new frog give him a good month or two to settle in before rearranging his tank and for him to show his true colors. You may find once settled he will sit out on a pce of wood green as can be.. fingers crossed...
