Other bugs that come with my crickets
Also, i went to a pet supermarket today (that was actually the name of the place, so you could only imagine the conditions these animals were in) and i noticed something that really bothered me.. I’ve never owned FBT’s before but i know the basic rule about feeding a frog a cricket no larger then the space between the eyes. The crix they had in the tank were so big that i wouldn’t feed them to my adult RETF. The FBT’s eyes were so close together... can they handle crix that big? |

I have 4 FBT and they eat medium crickets and have no problem. I have one that is a little smaller than the rest so i make sure he gets the smallest cricket possible. My one toad (i call her big momma cuz she is huge) she could handle a large cricket.. she is about twice the size as the small guy. |

When the last one died, I noticed there was a dead cricket in its tank with little white worms crawling around on it. I don’t know if this was just a dead cricket or if the frog had eaten and then expelled it, it was hard to tell ... I was inclined to think the latter, though. Looked like little maggots, for lack of better description, and I researched online to no avail. At that point, I chalked it up to some kind of parasite that killed the froggies, thinking he had eaten and expelled this one with the worms, but still seemed strange. The only thing I’d done differently was going to new place for crickets one day. The rest of the crickets seemed okay though, and I had fed some to the other frogs (plus the new one mentioned below) with no problems. I stripped the tanks of ones that died and cleaned them out thoroughly, even dumping all the coco fiber substrate and putting in reptile carpet instead, worried the worms had come from the substrate somehow. After the first 2 passed, I took my child to get a new froggie, and we got a nice blue dumpy frog. He’s a real cutie, nice and chubby and seems to be very healthy (named him Boo Berry). He’s in a quarantine tank and seems well. When the 3rd one passed, leaving us with just the new WTF and one of our old Golden treefrogs (Luigi, again, in separate tank from WTF), a day later, I grabbed the crickets we had left to feed the remaining 2 frogs, and when I did, the crickets’ tank was covered with the same white maggot-type worms I had seen in the dead frog’s tank!! They had to have come from the store, the only things in the crix tank were water and the dry cricket food by Fluker’s, which I’ve used for a long time with no problem. I threw the crix away ASAP and bought new crix from our usual pet store, but I’m worried we might have fed some of the contaminated crix to the new frog before I realized this. Now our new WTF, while still eating and all, has been staying in his water dish for hours at a time. Is this a normal thing? It’s been a long time since I had a WTF (had the 2 Goldens and 2 White lipped). He seems okay otherwise but if this is a sign of a problem, I want to do something now before it’s too late and we lose yet another frog!! Any idea what these worms might have been? Sorry this is so long. I can start a new post if need be, but since it goes with this post, thought I’d add it here. (Also, RIP Fudge, Coco Puff, and Freddie. |

The white insects/worms found with the dead crickets sound like a maggot to me.. These maggot type form with rotting food sources... Some store bought crickets are kept in containers that contain old and dead crickets and rotting food which is the perfect breeding ground for these.... Not normally a killer of crickets however.... Some worm insects however can be... Many parasites can be spread in decaying matter and then in turn make your amphibians ill... Its wise to deal with cricket breeders if possible. If not when you buy use fresh clean egg cartons so the eggs of these insects can’t hatch... Cleaner your crix tank the better off the crix are to feed your pets.. Now there is another insect that is black (going from memory here as haven’t seen for a long while now)...almost centerpeide like very stealth in movement. Looks sort of between a worm and centerpeide... "HIDE BEETLE" the larvae in the long centerpeide insect... This insect is harmless to crickets but is attracted to the decaying crickets that are dead and very little is known about the actual insect itself if I remember correctly from old posts.... They invade museums and can attack specimens and be a real problem. They strip meat off the bones of defenseless herps... A real problem in museums because of skin found on different types of bones. The only true protection is an all glass sealed show case... There is debate whether or not the hide beetle hurts some reptiles.... When contained in a tank the herp has no where to go so is at this beetles mercy... These beetles love skin whether its dead or live..They can bore into just about anything including wood.. I always got them in my store bought crickets but never since ordering from breeders and online.... HOPPY |

Could be the fly thing, though, because I did notice these teeny tiny flies around the cricket tank, too. Like fruit flies only even smaller yet. I didn’t think much of that but maybe that’s what it was. I didn’t have any problem with the last batch of crix that I bought from the usual pet store. The other pet store (where we bought the crix in question) was very smelly and not well kept, if you know what I mean. I would never buy an animal there so shouldn’t even have gotten crix there but it’s the only other store we have and I really needed crix. But what about our WTF? Is it normal for them to sit in their water dish so much? It’s been in the water almost constantly lately. The humidity is right around 80, and temps during day around 80 and at night around 75. I would think they’d be in water dish if humidity was too low but I didn’t think 80 was too low, is it? If anything, it might be high but I keep misting thinking he’s in the water because it’s not humid enough in there. Any thoughts on that? |

The maggots can very well be fly larvae... But the black centerpeide type is another story....all gross...lol Usually flies will form if vegetation or food is available so insure no waste or food is left.... Even frog waste, some types of flies will feed upon or lay eggs in... FROG SITTING:.... No the frog sitting in water too long can be a sign of something... Your humidity needs to be down some...80% is a breeding ground for bacteria as these are not rain forest frogs... Usually the frog won’t eat though if unwell... Male/dominant frogs tend to sit in the water longer in tanks making it the ideal spot for a female to come... Is this a male? Let me know HOPPY |

Just a couple of days ago I had the white mites, I poured vinigar into the dirt and that seemed to kill them. I do need to replace the bedding soon however. Try this, I also clean with vinigar as someone on here said it was a good cleaner, be careful not to pour to much, as it is harmful to your froggies. |

Yes this is a rule of thumb... especially for new owners and young frogs... Personally I feed mine (Whites, now older) any size.. But for smaller frogs like my big eyes or if you own like red eyes its wise to stay smaller ....I use head size say no bigger than 3/4 or their head. In a mixed tank like mine I insure there is a variety of crickets to suit all inhabitants... Males in big eyes species for instance are more than 1/2 the size of the females.. HOPPY |
