 HIya I’m new

HIya, my name is Susie, im 22 and live with my partner, 2 year old son, 5 corn snakes and 1 whites tree frog :) (we live in Essex in England)
i got my tree frog only last Saturday, i think he/she is at least a year old judging by its size. i bought it off a man in my area that we found on the Internet, i ’thought’ it was frog and complete set up of how things are supposed to be. but after doing some research i really don’t think its set up as it should be :S.

first of all it had no thermometer in there, and no hear source. so we went out on Sunday and bought a heat mat and thermometer and some greenery as he only had one vine, and also added a light to his cage..since putting the heat mat on he has slept in the corner where iv put the heat mat so i think he must have been cold. I’m only concerned as i read somewhere its not a good sign if they sleep on the ground? i know he has been active at night and i think he ate 2 crickets during the night.

i don’t think the tank he came with is big enough for him (I’m going to try and get a pic up) but funds are tight now so cant buy another one strait off but will be saving to get him a decent one ASAP. so I’m going to try and make this tank as good as it can be for him. i had a whites when i was at school and loved him and have done research but everywhere says different things so thought it would be nice to join you all in chatting if that’s OK? sorry for the ramble lol

 HIya I’m new

Suzie welcome to repticzone!!

Yes it is really hard to sort through all the misinformation!!! You are right WTF do need heat usually their temps should be in the low 80sF day and high 70sF night I have a heat mat under the tank on always which just brings the substrate temp up a bit and then I have lamps to bring up the ambient air temp in the tnak. I have the lights on one side so there is a cool and warm side.
No special lighting is needed. Make sure if you use a normal house bulb it is no more than 50w and have leaves between the light source and the frog to protect their eyes. Make sure they have 12 hrs night and 12 hours day. So if you need the lights on at night for warmth get infrared which they cannot see or a moon bulb.

One WTF should be in at least a 20gal tank for 1 frog.

Their humidity should between 50%-60% Mist only the glass of the tank not the frog itself.

Water should be in a bowl large enough for him to soak in but not so deep he can’t touch as they can drown. Make sure the water is treated with drops to remove heavy metals and chloramide.
Change the water daily.

Be careful about your choice of substrate, moss unless planted and alive can cause impaction and death avod it!!! Cocofiber is good. Alot of us use plain old white paper towels. Organic soil is also good. Planted tanks work great for keeping up humidity.

The best diet for him si crickets. Dust once a week with calcium and D3 powder. The crickets should be as long ans the distance between the frogs eyes.
Anyway this is just some basic info. Hope it helps and clears things up for you.

I agree with F&G’s post above. I like the caresheet for whites at amphibiancare.com if you’d like to check that out.

Probably sitting on the ground because that is where the only heat is. You can use a standard metal clamp dome light ($5 at Walmart in hardware section) with a 40W or 60W bulb. Try to be in that 80-85F range days and down to 75 at night.

Welcome to the forum..... Congrats on the new frog!!....

I’m sure you will find him/her very sweet......

Some whites do sleep on the floor and many will sleep in a cave. Its myth that all Whites will sleep up high. Some do but many don’t. Most find Whites are bottom to middle of tank dwellers when the tank is set up correctly... These frogs are one of the few that enjoy a good walk along the substrate... They are more apt to sit on a pce of wood or a rock....

EAting is a good sign of health once they have settled in some, usually they eat by a weeks end if not right away. Look for pine cone shaped waste..lol
