 Skinny tree frog?

Hi everyone! I’m new to these forums AND new to owning tree frogs as well. I’ve had a gazillion other animals but have to stick to ones without fur now because of my allergies.

Anyhow, two weeks ago we went to a local pet store and purchased 2 Golden Tree Frogs. The two we picked looked pretty healthy. I haven’t read very much about them, but I did read I was supposed to feed them at night, so I’ve stuck about 8 crickets in there for both of them. Gary - the smaller of the two, seems a little skinny to me. Velociraptor - who is much larger, looks healthy and like he/she has a little meat on their bones.

Am I feeding them correctly? Do they need to have crickets every night? What about meal worms?

And, I hope this question doesn’t sound dumb, but I am curious - can they see in the dark? I want to know how they can see the crickets.

Thanks

They are in a 15-gallon tank and the crickets are small to medium. Its sort of a mix between the two, where I purchase them.

Are you positive that both eat? Sometimes competition between frogs for food can be seen. ON occassion there is a stronger more aggressive frog that hogs the food....

Is there any odour (knock your socks off odour from their waste?)?.... This is a sign of parasites...

A run down of your tank and temps/humidity and decorations would help members greatly in assisting you or pic....

Some frogs take awhile to settle in to a new home. How long exactly have you had them? Usually a week to get eating for some and a month to really get comfy if tank is optimal...

Sorry to ask this, but it’s Important you list every thing about your tank. I hate it to, I just spent 20 minutes typing one! but, you never know, people have to know these things. It’s vital to the frog

I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to the replies...

Both frogs seem to be thriving now...I think it was because they were stressed...

But I will list what my tank has... I’m new to this, so if I’m doing something wrong (even though they seem to be ok), I will fix it.

I have a 15 gallon tank with coconut fiber on the bottom. There is an Exo-Terra jungle vine in there for them to perch on as well as a fake plant that I’ve strung around it a couple times. I also put a wooden log in there (btw - all of these things were purchased at a local pet store) that they usually hide under. I have a medium sized ceramic dish that I fill with dechlorinized water each morning. I have a humidity and temperature gauge inside.

On top of the cage I have a grate so they can’t escape, though crickets do occasionally. I have a red infrared heat light that sits on top of the grate, but I only turn it on now at night when I want to peek at them. I should probably get a heating pad because winter is approaching.

The temp in the tank hovers around 70 to 75 degrees daily and the humidity is usually around 70% to 75% though it can sometimes get to 60%, if I don’t mist it frequently enough.

I think I covered everything - so far. :)

I would really suggest getting your temps warmer... 80f to 85f range is better for daytime. Night time temps should be 75f range no lower than 70f.
If temps are too cool eating is difficult as digestion slows.... Also risk of illness is far greater and mold and mildew etc heightened... Life is shortened...

Your humidity sounds fine...should be above 60%..... A good way many of us keep humidity up is by covering part of the screen on top with plexi glass or I use foil. Adding larger water areas or foggers. Just a warning on foggers it must be hidden from the frogs as shock is a real hazard. Some use a jam jar with another pot placed in with a cut out for roots of a plant like a lily and a fogger inside where the roots go...

Waterfalls are ideal but many find the bought ones allow crix inside and also the frogs sit in the spray so water goes off the sides onto floor. These things can all be remedied with a little imagination... Some the frogs can get in the pump area....

There is many ideals but misting is just as good if your able...

A heating pad is ideal ....I reccomend them..... If you use one just a small is plenty for your size tank. Its placed on bottom on the warm side (warm and cool side to a tank)... Make sure you put a pce of driftwood or large rock over the area to use as a conductor of heat... This insure no burns but allows a comfy warm spot.. (my frogs favorite spot beside water dish)

Your infrared light would be used with heat mat for night...day you would use heat mat and day lamp....
So your mat would be on 24/7 . Day lamps whether normal house bulbs or sun bulbs should be diffused by branches with leaves or vines to protect frogs eyes. Anything over 60 watt can harm eyes of amphibians....

If you don’t have already a good timer power bar is ideal for tanks...sold at hardware stores usually... Insure there is a day and night plug settings for lamps and 24 hr ’on ’ plug openings for pumps and mats that are always on.. I bought the 8 plug ones for my tanks...
Reptile stores usually sell too. They can be pricey but well worth it in the long run...

*I will put a pic so you can see driftwood idea and vines above...
