 Question about lighting

Hi! We just became first-time owners of a White’s tree frog, and I have a question about lighting. The pet store kept trying to sell me a bunch of extras, even though some seemed to contradict things I’d read doing research before buying the frog. We have a ten-gallon aquarium for the frog. They convinced me to buy two large dome lights ($20 each) and two different bulbs. Some of what I’ve read says that one warming bulb is all that is needed. Below are the two bulbs I left the store with: If I only use ONE bulb, which of these two should I use? What is the difference between the two bulbs I bought? Thanks for any help! The bulbs are: 50 watt daylight spot (exo terra brand); called "Sun Glo--neodymium basking spot lamp". THe other bulb is coiled and is called Repti Glo 5.0 UVB Tropical Terrarium Lamp" with 13 watts.

 Question about lighting

I’d take them both back!!!

A plain old incandescent house bulb 50watt or less is all that is necessary. Buy a $5 lamp from walmart
(in your little tank probably only a 25 would be needed)

WTF do not need the UV lights which is what you have there.
If you have live plants they are not a bad idea but not necessary.

The basking spot lamp is probably an infrared (not sure though) Infrared is a light/heat source that the frogs cannot see. If you are having trouble keeping heat where it should be that can be used but it isn’t usually necessary.

In one of my tanks I have a fluro light I sometimes switch it out for a uv bulb to give my live plants a boost.
In my other tank I have 2 25watt incandescent bulbs. I can either turn one or both on depending the heat I need. In that tank I also have a moon bulb which I turn on at night so we can see the frogs jumping around in the dark!!

Just for your info a 10gal is tooooo small for an adult WTF. At an 1 &1/2 you will need to get the frog at least a 20gal tank.

 Question about lighting

I use an exo terra full spectrum bulb it mimics the light output of the sun. makes my tank more natural looking. for heat i use a night glo blue bulb.

 Question about lighting

Hi
Just thought I would throw my two cents in. You hear a lot about nocturnal animals not needing uvb light, but with all do respect... any animal, insect or reptile regardless of being diural or nocturnal need a little uvb. They absorb it in small amounts even if they are hiding all the day.... so my two cents is, it will not hurt your pet and it is not a waste of time and money... maybe only put it on for a few hours a day or week. I have one for my white’s tree frog and house gecko. I also had one for my corn snakes even though they don’t really need it. Sorry not trying to step on anyone or be righteous at all, just trying to play fair.

 Question about lighting

i dont know about with everything

but those uvb bulbs have been causing serious health problems for reptiles and do not put out the proper amounts of uvb

dust their food with calcium w/ d3 at least once a week and you should not have a problem with him
they do not need uvb and they dont bask so they wont get any benifit from it if they are hiding all day

 Question about lighting

I personally Leave my moon glow bulb on all day and night but thats mainly because fall is here and my apartment can get quite chilly. I’m not an expert on lighting but I agree with Foolishfather’s post. All animals need a little sunlight. Heck I get really depressed in the wintertime when the sun hides behind clouds for a few weeks straight. A not too strong bulb in a corner of the cage for a basking spot would be ok. And definately dust your feeder bugs to that they get their vitamins. Also, watch your humidity levels. A light can dry out your habitat if you don’t mist the cage every so often. A ten gallon aquarium is too small for your little guy. They require at least a 20 gallon to be happy. Hope this helps, and congratulations on your new froggie! :D
