 WTF’s unusal croaking?

My WTF tried croaking tonight...and it came out more like loud squeaking. This isn’t his normal croak. What could cause this? I’ve noticed that he hasn’t been croaking as much as he usually does during spring time. But, he’s active and eating normal. Should I be concerned about this? He had a hard winter. He was sick for awhile, but I used mela fix and it cleared it right up. He’s getting to be an old man now. That’s why I thought he hasn’t been croaking as much.

How Old is he? and is he a full adult frog? i’ve noticed sometimes mine will emit a squeak sometimes but have a full voice too. Most of my whites are younger then adult age so i was seriously considering if they are like us. when get get to be a teenager where our voice changes and sometimes squeaks. if he’s already an adult it might be something else.

He’s about 8 years old now. So he’s an adult. He’s never had this issue before. He did it again last night. It’s like he can’t croak normal anymore.

Your frog is still considered young for Whites, not an old man yet..lol ... They can live up to 30 yrs though 15 yrs to 20 yrs is more common...

As for his croaking issue.... Is he eating normally? Is it possible something could be caught in his throat... The only way to tell usually is by his eating habits. If normal then it means the throat is normal/clear.

Whites can have a high pitch scream...heartbreaking scream... Its usually heard when hurt or if a predator is near that he can’t avoid.. I’m wondering if something of this nature is at play though he can’t get full voice by either weakness or blockage...

Make sure he can climb normally etc; by placing him on the side of your tank to see if climbing is normal, then walking on a clean table top... Watch his structure closely to insure he is balanced etc.....

If all seems normal with these small tests then I would re-treat with mela fix to insure its not an internal issue.. Then take it from there or if anything changes...

Another problem can be water.... Are you using tap water or bottle? Tap may of changed for your area over the years to chloramine. You can check your local water site. Bottle check website to see if ph is acidic...PH of 7 to 9 is best....

Hope this helps

 WTF’s unusal croaking?

It’s good to know that whites have such a long life span! Previous frogs I’ve had (that weren’t WTFs)have not lived that long. He is eating normally and is very active. He has no problems climbing. I do use tap water. I let it sit out for a couple of days before I use it. I’ve always done this. I will re-treat him with the mela fix and hope this helps.

Thanks for your help!

All sounds good.... Check your local water website though to see if chloramine is added... Only chlorine will evaporate sitting water out but not chloramine.

Chloramine is the new treatment to water systems. It has no odor, color or any way to tell if added unless your water company tells you... Its a slow killer to all herps including frogs.... If added water drops must be used....

Everything I’ve been told and read says if it’s bottled make sure it’s Spring Water, not Distilled, the Distilled Water can kill them. But I’m certainly not an expert. If anyone knows differently feel free to correct me. I’ve had a WTF for 9 months, he lives in my classroom.

There is a good debate on weather distilled and RO water is good or bad for them. Some people use it other’s don’t so it likely depends on other factors.

I myself just used Amquel to treat tap water. Others use Prime or TopFin. The water treatments that are aimed for dechlorinating fish water works just fine for frogs, as long as it’s not adding medcines and or stuff for fish’s slime coat production. This is cheaper than using bottled water, better for the enviornment, and as studies have show, a lot of bottled water is just bottled tap water. Go figure.

It depends. If the water is hard, then a softener would bring it more towards a basic level which is probably safest. If it is already basic and you soften it further it could lead towards kidney damage. However, the research tends to conflict and differs from species to species I’m sure. I would just test your water’s hardness. You can get a kit from a fish dept or bring in a water sample and they’ll usually test that stuff for a small fee or for free if you ask right.

If you indeed switch over you can do mixtures of what you are currently with your tap water. Treat the entire thing with some water treatment.

A lot of the bigger breeders use RO and distilled water. Personally, I used RO at my facilities and treated tap water for the few odds and ends I had at home. It wasn’t a deciding factor in the animal’s overall health.

The hardness of the water varies depending on where it is in the cycle and how much rain we have had. I will just stick with bottled spring water. I have 2 whites and some green tree frogs in another cage.So that should be ok for them without adding anything , right?

You should be fine either way. You can treat the spring water if you want just to be safe, but usually it is more delicate species that you need to really agonize this issue with. I’d say just keep doing what’s working for you as long as you don’t mind shelling out for the occasional 98 cent gallon of water.

 WTF’s unusal croaking?

Just wanted to let you guys know that distilled water is very bad for frogs. It’s because of their skin being permeable. There is a long boring scientific explanation, but I won’t get into that. Essentially, the water is absorbed so much into their skin that they bloat up and die. I’ve been told spring water is the best. I’ve learned this from my herpetology class recently and came straight out of the mouth of a herpetologist. Thought I would share my new knowledge :)
