 Questions...

Hi there. I’ve been getting ready to purchase a White’s Tree frog, but I still have a few questions before I continue.

First, I realize that there is some daily and weekly cleaning requirements for a frog. Please correct me if I’m wrong. The daily requirements consist of spot check for feces and cleaning out the water bowl. I’m not so sure about the weekly requirements. My terrarium is set up with a few inches of hydroballs on the bottom, a piece of plastic mesh, and coconut fiber on top of that. I’ll be putting in some sort of frog moss for decoration, a branch, and a few plastic plants. I also have a waterfall kit that has water running down the background into a little bowl made out of half a coconut shell. The shell will have some holes in it for the water to then drain into the substrate and hydroballs, then back up to the waterfall with a pump.

My question is, what would my weekly cleaning be like if I have coconut fiber as my substate and hydroballs underneith that?

Also, I will be getting a clamp lamp. What sort of light bulb do I put in that?

Thanks in advance for any help! I really appreciate it!

See if you can get live moss. The dried sphagum moss is worthless, and if ingested dangerous. I would do weekly or biweekly water changes to the water in the false bottom. If you have live plants I would grow them for a week or two before you add them to your tank, or just run your tank planted for a week or two before you add a frog.

The bulb will depend on the size of the tank. It will provide light and keep your tank temps up during the day so get an appropriate strength.

If you live plant the tank you should get good biological filtration.

Best of luck.

 Questions...

Hi. Thanks for replying! I bought some dried "frog moss" today that will become alive when watered. I have fake plants and am not planning on getting live plants. I am going to do partial water changes as often as needed, be that weekly or bi-weekly. What do you think?

A lot of plant decore marketed towards frogs I don’t trust. I get most of my moss collected from forests and grown organically at my house for a month or two. I’d be interested in seeing this frog moss. Without live plants I would do weekly 20-25% water changes.

In a month or two you can cut back to bi-weekly changes though, or get a fish kit and test your water’s amonia and nitrite levels. Once you get through the nitrogen cycle it’s much safer, but it takes a while to get those bacteria colonies started.

Honestly the moss is fairly worthless. On occasion you’ll get frogs that injest some and get impacted or develop prolapse of the intestine. The risk is small but nonetheless a risk. You can get rid of it, or offer your white’s food in a bowl. The crickets can’t climb a smooth glass bowl and are to stupid to jump, it also lets you monitor how much they eat and keeps the crickets from escaping and hiding.
