New owner asking about feeding and Social habits.

I was wondering how much and how often I should feed my new whites tree frog, Yoda. I had the Petstore owner tell me that she feeds them about two large crickets a day, and the caresheets tell me to feed an unspecified number of crickets twice a week. As I don’t want Yoda to get fat yet don’t want to starve him either, how many crickets do you guys feed your frogs and how often. I also want to know if it’s ok for Yoda to live alone, or does he need a buddy. Yoda is quite young only about two inches and lives in a nice 20 gallon with eco earth substrate. Thanks!

no they dont need friends

as for how much to feed him
at that size i would feed every other day however much he will eat in 10-15 minutes or so

my guys only eat about a dozen each once a week
they wont eat anymore and they are a good weight but it all depends on the idividual frog

Thanks! I was also wondering if I should feed him in seperate enclosure. I noticed that I had to catch a few crickets for him because they hid in the branches and dug into the substrate. I know I should try to handle him as little as possible because I’m potentially toxic to him lol. Is feeding him in a seperate enclosure handling him too much?

Put a few crickets into a glass bowl and set it in the enclosure. Keep refilling it until he stopps eating. It’s a good way to see how much he eats and keep him from escaping. Feeding in a seperate container is acceptable as well.

My 2 are babies about 2 ins. They seem to eat alot of crix. The crix are small 1/4 in. but they each eat about 10 a day.

Younger frogs will eat more as they are growing. Older ones I feed 2-3 times a week. Be sure to dust the crickets often with calcium and vitamin dusts.

Thanks for you advice guys. I fed him earlier this evening. He ate about six. I think it might be because He is a little chilly because we had a sudden cold snap where I live. I’m getting him an undertank heater tonight. What are good heating requirements for your frogs? I live with a roommate who might not enjoy having an infared night light. Any ideas on how to warm the enclosure at night? And what is a good kind of bulb to use for a heat lamp during the day?

Oh yeah one more thing? Do only females make the distress call? I heard Yoda do that when I nudged him onto my hand to feed him, when earlier that day he was quietly rawking at me in the tank? Is Yoda in actuality a Yaddle? lol.

Sorry to jump in, but both males and females make distress calls, it’s not a way to tell the sex of the frog.

No problem jump in all you like. Not meaning to make a frog pun :). I think its still too early to tell but I swear I wake up to some croaking sounds in the middle of the night. I only hope Yoda dosent plan to keep me and my roomie up all night in the future. Thanks for the advice!
