 Whites temp concern

My family room is getting cooler with the change of seasons. I may be having the same problem as Trudi. I have a 60 watt over my 24 in. high cage. It keeps the temp right beneath at 78 degrees. The problem is down near the bottom the temp is 69 or 70. Is that too cold for the bottom? I added another bulb to shine on the side and the temp up high gets to 88 and the bottom 72. I know I can get an under tank heater but I dont want to if its not necessary. My question is, is 88 too hot, will they just move out from underneath it if they get too hot? Is 70 at the ground level too cold for day time? The night temp is 74 around the upper level and still 69 or 70 near the bottom. They are whites tree frogs. I will try and post a pic tonight

69 to 70 is fine for the bottom

if she is too cold she will move up to the top for warmth so i dont think it will be a problem

My Whites Tree Frog Cage

My American Green Tree Frog Cage

My Emergency Cage

My Anole Cage

These are all planted terrariums. There are some suction cup artificial on the glass until the plants grow taller. The substrate is the cocoa fiber with real moss growing over the fiber so there is no loose chunks.

by emergency tank do you mean a hospital tank? if so that wont work

a hospital tank should be a bare tank with only paper towel and a branch or 2
the reason for this is b/c if the animal has an illness it can stay in the bedding and the plants and can still spread

but they are all beautiful, i can never get plants to last long they always die after a while lol yours look great good job

also where did you get the first tank? it looks neat

By emergancy tank I mean for anole eggs or if I see a new hatchling in with the adults. The first tank is actually 2 10 gal tanks epoxied together. They were 8$ ea at meijers. The only problem with it is you have to reach down from the top to get the water ponds out etc. so it has to be on a low table as its 24 ins deep, but its serving my purpose til my frogs get a little bigger. Thanks! I think I enjoy the plants almost as much as the animals.

oh ok

and the tank looks neat that would be a pain reaching for stuff though

i used to have a reptarium(one of those screen cages) for one of my geckos but it was so tall and hard to get to the bottom of i moved her into somthing else

it was a nightmare cleaning up poo and stuff b/c i had to toally tare down the whole cage

Your reptiles and amphibians will thermo regulate themselves. If you notice them huddled near a heat source then you might try using a stronger bulb to heat more of the tank. A 60 should be fine though.

I finally got my daytime temp to the 75-80 range. I moved the frog tank to the other side of the room so it’s against an inside wall, not an outside one. And I have two lightbulbs, a 60 watt and a 75 watt, both are just regular household bulbs. This seemed to do the trick. I’m not sure what the nightime temps are since Stuey’s in my classroom. His light is on a timer some I’m going to assume it does drop some.

Mine is an exo terra 18x18x24 tall and I now have 2 60 watt regular bulbs about 4 in. above screen on top. The temps on top are 84 and the bottom near substrate is 69 degrees. At night I have 1 60 watt red bulb and the temp goes down to 73 - 75 and maybe as low as 66 near the bottom. I hope its not too much colder in the winter but that’s the draftiest place in the house. the family room!

What should the temperature difference be between night and day? I’ve read that their range is between 85 - 70 degrees. Does that mean i should get the temp up to 85 in the day and drop it to low 70’s at night?

well i guess you need more info for that question. I have four young (1-2 inches) WTF in a 70 gallon glass aquarium. I have temp gauges at both ends of the tank and the cool end stays in the low to mid 70’s all day and night but the ’warm end’ (large desert heat pad and 150 watt daylight blue reptile bulb are on a 12 hour day timer, and 50 watt nightlight red on for 12 hours of night) will peak out around 85 and drop to almost 70 at night. Should i keep the warm end warmer at night?

A temp drop in moderation is fine. As long as it isn’t too drastic you will be fine. a 5-10 degree drop is natural. They can handle temps from low 70’s to mid 80’s. Keep around these and you will be alright.
