 REED FROGS

Well this is ironic. Im actually looking for a means to get a variety into my reed frogs. I just ordered 6 frogs from a site that stated that they were "assorted" reed frogs thinking that id get two or three subspecies but ended up getting 7 (yes they sent me one extra) common reeds. If you have any luck breeding them let me know. Where did you get your animals from considering I’m south jersey?

Here are mine...well the ones that are out. Im kind of concerned about the humidity in the cage. It tends to float between %70 and %80. I do have a working fountain in there and so far they seem to like it but time will only tell.

I have had both species, and currently keep a large breeding colony of the puncticulatus.

They are one of the loudest reed frogs that I have had, and you may have difficulty placing any CB offspring that you produce once prospective owners hear them..LOL

That said, this has to be my favorite species ( besides Alboguttatus ) that I keep. I have 2 female and around 9-10 males in a 29 gallon tank at the moment. They have been this way for a few years now. Since they are nocturnal, there is plenty of room for them.

Also, your humidity is WAY too high for those species. Aim for %50-55 percent at all times other then when you are misting the tank. Provide a large, shallow water dish and plenty of large leaf, sturdy plants for them to climb around on.

If you have any questions, please email me at:

gretchenellie @ yahoo. com ( no spaces )

here is also a link to a thread I created about a smaller breeding group that I have:

http://www.reptileforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47213

good luck~

Thanks for the reply. I thought that the frogs preferred higher humidity but were able to withstand lower humidity. Like i said i have a working fountain that i filled in the reservoir with river rock and gravel in the place of a dish. Im not sure if they dislike flowing water but so far it seems to be acceptable.

Being that these are an African species, the humidity needs to be adjusted accordingly.

Bacterial infections can set in with these guys and wipe out an entire group in a matter of weeks if they are kept too humid/wet.

has anyone ever had any luck obtaining frogs whos coloration is more spotted then lined?, and does anyone know if it would be ok to keep possible sub species in the same enclosure considering the subspecies are all of about the same size?
Any like these...

I got my reeds at pets plus its in lockport ny, its about a 7 hour drive from jersey, i know we dont have any now, there was a madagascar order and the only reason my boss ordered them is because i wanted some, i can let you know when we get more but we only do about 3 madagascar orders a year, and reed frogs wont be on there unless i want a few more (wich i will) i dont know why we dont have them more often, there colorfull and small i think they would sell but apparently they dont, but anyway i will let you know when we get more

yes you can mix species, but it is frowned apon because they cross breed and its already verry hard to tell the diffrence between species, but i am housing my 2 species together hoping for a cool new color morph, just be concoius of what species you house together because some are much smaller than others, but like i said i would like to breed mine and if i get some tads i will let everyone know

realy 50-55%? even in rainy season? so far everything i have read so far says around 70-100%, but if you have had them for a few years ill take your word for it!

also i will post pics of my species in a few days

sorry about the delay between posts, i was checking the wrong site thinking it was this one hahaha, but anyway i am going to try to post pics of my species tonight or tommarow, and if you are interested in buying afew i can let you know when i get some eggs from mine, and also when we get some more into work, i get them at cost 7$ from my work but i would not ask for much if my frogs do breed, i will probly just give a few to you from the first batch when it happens (probly a few months down the road) i can let you know if we get some in at work but i would wait untill captive reeds are available from ether myself or others

i should have the pics up tonight!

 REED FROGS

you’re not hoping that your two different Reed species interbreed..... am I right?

If you are, you really need to rethink that idea. There are so many unidentified reed’s on the market now, and putting out hybrids is absolutely irresponsible and careless.

If you are thinking of making a "new color morph" by mixing the two species.............BUYER BEWARE!

%50 humidity is what I have been trying to achieve in my tanks for years. I do not simulate a rainy season as my large breeding group regularly drops clutches. So many in fact, that I have a hard time trying to find homes for the hundreds of froglets that morph...

Each species needs their own setup.

Some pictures of my Hyperolius Puncticulatus that I have raised and are currently in my care:

thanks for all the replys. anyhow why is everyone against color morphs. Given that they are un natural but look at the current state of the canid and feline races. cross breeding has yeilded some truely wonderful creatures. My pups are both adopted mutts and I would have it no other way. If someone would please clarify the issue with crossbreeds please enlighten me. Also hi gretch i think i was talking to you on frog forums.

haha i know it is already extreemly hard to identify species, and i know its frowned apon to cross breed the reeds, but my goal is not to sell the "interacial" frogs if it does indeed happen, i plan to keep the frogs that look best and give away ONLY species i am 100% sure of, the cross breeds and color morphs are for myself only, normal reeds will be given away and sold, my employer already had a hard enugh time getting them straightened out as it is!
im working on getting my camera i should have pics up today I swear
i have 3 set ups for frogs and currently only the 40 is housing frogs, i am looking for some males if you have any you can spare, i will show pics of the set ups they will be going into, if you would be willing to send some!

very nice tank.

I dust at every feeding. I feed my adults 2-3 times per week (roaches, waxmoths, crickets, meal worms, etc) and babies are fed 4-5 times per week.

I dust using Repcal Calcium without D3.
