Tortoise?!
Its my b day today - 23 and my girlfirned got me a tortoise. I dunno what kind he is - how to take care of him etc. I have him in a 20 gallon long tank he is supposedly a year old and have a 60w heat lamp and a uvb - and have him on these little rabbit pellot things that the pet shop told my girlfriend. Now I have 2 beardies and 2 corn snakes and know pet stores usually dont know much about them but apparently this pet store is highly reccomended and she drive 2 hours to get him for me. Also he has black stuff on the corner of his mouth and looks like he is shedding? around his eye brow - normal? I dont know symptoms for sickness but want to make sure he is ok. I think he is a sulcata? he looks identicle to my friends which is - i think?! Thanks - oh and his name is crush and he is a year old!

My friend had a 12incher which was a few years old still small but it dug a 6foot wide 3 foot deep hole in his yard. These tortoises are big resposiblity and you should really plan BIG. Right now you need a tortoise table, UVB light, soil/sand substrate aobut 5 inches deep. 8x5foot table should be good, but you will need to upgrade in the future. Also you need a 5-10% uvb bulb. Good luck, PS if you cant care for it in the future, then you should look for a new home, or take it back to the petshop. Think of your future and the torotoises future. Its a Sulcata tortoise or African spur thigh tortoise. Look it up on google, and decide can i care for a tortoise this size 2-2.5 foot size. |

Normal growth is about 1/4 inch-----every month the first two years. Then they slow down alot but still noticable growth monthly. Sulcata go from tiny 2-3 inch babies to full grown 30 inchers in about 5-8 years...thats not slow!!! My 2 year old is 13 inches long and 18 pounds! My 3 year olds are more then 25 pounds and right in at 16 inches long. Two year old male:
He’s shiny because he had just soaked in the tub...I never use that turtle and tortoise killer lotion. PLEASE anyone with a tortoise or turtle, they do NOT need lotion, shell conditoner or anything else rubbed into them! The stuff blocks natural oils and stuff in the shell and they can’t shed like they should and the shell that should be shed gets "glued" to them and confines them...think an adult in a childs wet suit....the stuff hurts them and will kill them, I lost a rescue from the stuff! Turtles and tortoises are made for the environment you are SUPPOSED to be creating when you set them up in your home, if you can’t provide the correct environment you should not punish them by rubbing some crap into them and making them suffer! Ethical question- does the person above come down and rub lotion on them? Why should we be doing it then? |
