What is wrong with this tortoise, please help!

Hello there,

My grandma was given a Horsfield tortoise some time ago and I believe now it is about 4yrs old, I could be wrong...Upon visiting her, I took out the tortoise from the Viv, noticed rupturing of its shell. Excuse my ignorance and lack of expertise, as this could be a normal complaint, but I just thought I’d take some pictures and ask for some expert advice as I can’t find any info on the web.

The tortoise is fed on wild plants/lettuce/green leaves and occasional fruit (tomatoes/odd strawberry). It has the calcium supp sprinkled over although not every time it is fed.
It is housed in a vivarium covered in wood chippings with a heat lamp, but not UVA/UVB and has access to water.
It does not go outdoors

If anyone could help/suggest advice I would be most grateful as I’m starting to feel real sorry for this little fella.

Pictures are linked below...also can anyone tell the sex by the images?

Advice really appreciated,
Nick

you should feed it collar green mustard green yellow squash dandelions etc. tomato but try to avoid the lettuce it has no nutritional values...the enclosure should be 6 (5)feet long 3 feet wide and 3 feet tall...u should get a uvb light at least 100 watts the basking area should be 80-95...and that should kinda help...

Nick this looks like and american tortiose. take him to a local vet and get him looked at it appears that he is not getting proper light UVB and nutritien. Get a book out of the library or buy one on the general care and feeding of an American box turtle. Spend the money get him to a vet before he gets worse. If your vet is not sure what to do, ask them if they can refer you to a vet clinic that handles "exoctic" animals which is what torts are considred to be in when in a vet catagory.
