if there is red patches behind where an ear would be located, my guess is that it is a red eared slider. If its shell is smooth withno bumps, its probably a soft-shelled turtle. i agree with scuba frog. you should describe the turtle and post a picture.

Look up pictures of red eared sliders on the web to be absolutely certain. Then look for care sheets. the web is full of them. just use common sense and if you have any questions at all the people here give great reliable advice. in short...do a lot of research so you can keep your little guy healthy.
