My mom says i have to get rid of my turtle. I was thinking of this marine museam that is near my house. But i found my turtle outside in my back yard and have had him since 2003 or 2004. He was only like 2 inches big at the most. i don`t know if i should just but him in this lake thats behind my house. There are so many more of the same turtles but my worry is that he will not know what to do since he pretty much hasn`t been in the wild before. any answers

This is one reason why we shouldnt take an animal from the wild.... :(
I would find a new home for him... Do not release him back in the wild

Jackie :)

Were are you located? There are some locate turtle rescues that keep them here ...maybe by you also

I would suggest euthenasia. There are too many Red Eared Sliders , most f them will end up in the wild anyway. I would be more interested in preserving native wild populations than trying to place a ferell specimen of the most common chelone in the world.

Just cause there common doesn’t mean they don’t get a shot at life. Its not RES fault this kid took it out of the wild 2 + years ago.

Its a natural process just thinning the herd. There are quite possibly more Trachemys Scripta Elgans in the world than Homo Sapien. Gimme a break RES populations are epidemic! Go to this link and educate yourself on the dangers this animal present to native populations worlwide. Millions of RES are exported from the US daily!

Invasive species

DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RES will never be endangered they pose a serious threat to all other turtles worldwide. Those things are shipped from the US by the millions daily

I disagree, besides there is a major difference between humans and turtles, if you can assign the same value of a human life to that of a turtles, you are seriously messed up.

Virginia is their native range. You having some weird personal issue with them doesn’t really change that. To be honest, even up here in Ohio where they’ve been brought in and established, they haven’t really impacted local species. The real threats are habitat destruction and overcollection, not whether or not there are sliders living in the same swamp. I’m not saying "Yay! Let them go everywhere!" but, seriously, the existance of sliders is not the ecological menace of the century.

I own 3 RES. They are not my favorite turtles. They live in my pond. The point I am trying to make is that the trade of RES worldwide is threatening other (possibly endangered) species. You people might grasp this if you actually took the time to read the links I post on the issue. But all you like to do is sit around and talk out of your a s s. I am posting this again and do not respond to me until you have actually read it. Geeze.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please read the entire article. Follow the links at the bottom of the page for the rest of the article.

It isn’t like if you get a RES you’re doing something horribly wrong, but I understand what you mean mikeornata but my favorite turtle is RES and Snapping, And if you do get a RES it doesn’t hurt because either way the turtle will be born and there really isn’t anything anybody can do about it. But I don’t think pet turtles should be released into the wild no matter what.

OK, I read the article. Don’t really see where euthenizing pets that are already paid for is the solutiuon. What, are the turtle mills supposed to hear about it and feel bad and retire or something? if you kill a turtle instead of putting it into a rescue, that’s one person who wants a slider that will buy one instead of adopt. That doesn’t discourage the industry; it rewards it. Now if we were talking about whether or not to rescue a sick turtle from Petco or something, then supply and demand would come into play, and I’d probably agree with you on what decision to make, but I didn’t see a question remotely resembling that.
