 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

I got a new turtle and i think it is a painted turtle and i don’t have any idea what to get it. it is a little over 1 inch big, it looks like a hatchling and the pellets look to big for it to eat.what should i do? How would you know if it is male or female? i have it in a small bowl that is about 10 inches and all thats in it for now is a rock in the middle and water around it, will that be ok? is there anything else it would eat?
please answer these questions soon because i need as much help as i can:(

 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

Try cutting pellets in half. You would know if it was a male or female because with males the tail and toe nales are longer than females.Try getting a uvb or uva basking bulbe for him/her.Also a baby turtle would eat small feeder fish and small worms that you dig up in a garden. You can tell if it is a hatchling if you turn it over and if it has a small yellow sack it is a hatchling. If this is the case do not feed it until the sack goes away.

 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

1. Get it out of the bowl immediately! It will die in its own filth. It should be in an aquarium/tank. 10 gallons per inch of shell. It needs several inches of water and a place to easily climb out and be completely dry. Buy a turtle filter at the pet store(about 20 bucks)
2. It is much too young to sex. So name it whatever you want.
3. Buy a basking lamp at the petstore.Preferably one that also contains UVB(essential for reptiles) You can also get a turtle dock for it to bask on.
4. Find the smallest turtle pellets to feed it(Daily) read the instructions on the food. You may still have to cut them smaller. Feed it greens once in a while.
5. Buy a calcium supplemrnt (Repcal) powder to sprinkle on food accasionally, and in the water. Calcium is essential for proper bone development and shell strength.
6. Read the threads on here about wild caught turtles. They should be left in the wild. But if however you decide to keep it anyway please follow the instructions above, and pay close attention to the instructions from other forum members as well.
Good Luck
Mike D.

 NEW TURTLE, HELP!!

ReptoMin makes pellets for baby turtles. They’re very small and contain (almost) everything a baby turtle needs.

I wouldn’t do it. Start with a 30 gallon tank for now. They’re pretty cheap. You can fet one for about $40 or less. It’ll last a while for a baby.

Then by no means are you in any position to responsibly own a turtle. Please put the D a m n thing back in the wild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is wrong with you people??????????/ I give up. Please read the link about wild caught turtles I posted yesterday. If you are to ignorant to take the advice you asked for, why bother. Your dumb a s s will keep it in a bowl anyway till it dies.

Mr. mikeornata,
I just wanted to inform you that you are sharing your infinite wisdom with a child who is an animal lover. Your profanity is unwanted and unnecessary. (And how clever spacing in between) I thought this was supposed to be a helpful website. That is why a friend of ours recommended it. Boy was he wrong! I think it is wonderful that you are so passionate about the topic. But perhaps you should keep in mind that there are youngsters who want to be, and are learning. So sad. Sounds like you do have a lot of knowledge. To bad you can’t conduct yourself in a "teaching", "adult" manner.
From the kids mom.

turtles can live many years in a bowl but that doesnt make it right. that’s a terrible environment for any pet. makes my stomach sick thinking about life in a bowl. people really need to do research before getting pets. its sickening.

and yes turtles pellets go in water .aquatic turtles can not swallow on land they need to be in water.

why did you get the turtle if you were not prepared to care of it properly? those turtle bowls are crap. they shouldn’t even sell them.

i don’t even keep my betas in bowls. they are in smaller tanks with filtration and every thing.

i always go above and beyond when it comes to the care of any pet in my position. animals depend on us as responsible pet owners to give them the proper requirements for long healthy lives (including medical attention if needed).
