 Turtle Expenses

I’ve seen a lot of people looking into research for new pets. First of all, thank-you for doing your research before you get your new turtle. I did tons of research, and I’m still learning a lot! I thought I might give an expense report for my setup and the money I’ve spent so far to keep my one RES in a happy healthy environment--- I love her, and it was worth it, but look at the possible costs before you do anything. I’m adult with a decent income.. I would never have been able to do this as a kid or a college student!

First - Tank and stands - Two tanks... the 30 gallon tank I bought when she was small and the 90 gallon I have now-
$1300

Filters - for both tanks -
$350

lighting -
$65

basking - PVC Pipe platform and plexi now, two Zoo Med docks before (they are algae magnets, and my turtle ate them)
$90

Food -
cost varies... greens, carrots, pellets, frozen green blocks, blood worms, feeder minnows... they all add up after time.. who knows what I’ve spent!

Extras -
water vacuum, river rock, water cond, hose, water conditioner, cuttle bone, vet visits/checkups, etc...
over $300 easy

I’ve only had her a year... I bought her when she was 4" long, and I’ve not regretted it...

I just thought you should know what you’re getting into= I’ve spent, according to this list, over $2100 on this pet.

You could go cheaper with Rubbermaid tanks, etc. but they don’t look as nice in my living room.

Thanks for reading and please don’t do it unless you’re willing to do it right.

The audacity to spend 2100.00 on a 12.00 turtle........ priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got an even cheaper idea spend about a grand on an outdoor enclosure/pond that your turtles can live in year round. It requires far less maintenance and is much more natural than a glass tank. It is much more enjoyable to add plants and landscape your own outdoor turtletopia. My turtles/tortoises come inside when they absoultely need to. Besides turtles thrive outdoors.
However I do realize that some people dont have a backyard. So sad.

Audacity?? What I do with my hard earned cash is my own business... I just wanted to let people know the reality so you can stop complaining about people not knowing what they are getting in to.

Dude... do you come here just to step on people? I wonder how many times I’ve seen you do it before...

My back yard doesn’t belong to me. I rent a house...

I didn’t want a pet that I barely see in a pond - and my dad has a pond.. the maintenance is crazy, and cost him a fortune to build.

And, guess what... my turtle is thriving...

Get off your high horse and stop being a self entitled jerk.

Ok maybe I should learn to be more selfish, and box all my animals up in glass tanks for my own enjoyment without regard to their welfare.
I was making a joke with the "priceless" thing, you know the Mastercard commercials?, I wasnt trying to be a smiley...just funny. Sorry you’re so dang sensitive.
I rent my house too, and my landlady loves my pond. It added value to her house.

And another thing... I dont see many people getting useful advice in this forum. Someone asks a valid question, we all harp on them, then start arguing with each other. Nobody gets advice it just turns into a pissing contest. From now on I will direct all questions about care to a very useful and informitive site chelonia . org. Its a non profit organization dedicated to presrving and protecting turtle and tortoise species worldwide.

Sorry I seem sensitive... but I’ve seen you jump on so many people.. I assumed it was on me too.

Be careful what words you choose... starting with words with negative connotations like audacity automatically make a person defensive.

Just so you know... the "selfish" remark you made still seems self righteous. I hope that’s what you’re going for...

Wow, this site hasn’t changed a bit, really kind of sad. When I first came here it was to get help on a rescue and I got it. It doesn’t matter how you chose to keep your turtle as long as you do it right and they are well cared for. I agree with kids getting turtles and not knowing the costs, Jackie stayed outside during good weather and in the garage for winter and I spent hundreds of dollars on her inside domain, of course she had the best and it was a huge area. My point is, quit being so critical of each other, this site is for help and to show off and brag about our pets. If I hadn’t have gotten help from some good people I would have known nothing about an RES, not even its name. Unfortunatly most of those people aren’t on here anymore as I’m not either since Jac’s has since been released. So please, do me a favor and support each other and keep posting pics, I do come to the site to see the baby pics!

reptic zone exists to provide a place where herpetologists can ask questions and sharpen thier wisdom and ability to care for the animals of the earth on others of the same profesion but different ideas for the caretaking of the wonderfull animals that roam our earth and we have been given the oppurtunity, nay the DUTY to provide a safe world for the creatues wich have been given to us for our enjoyment not for us to needlessly abuse them and thier natural habitat wich are slowly diminishing thanks to people not caring about the earth wich is not just for animals but for us we can not just think that when the world goes downhill and global warming destroys te ice caps and when our O so great civilazation comes crashing down because of our neglect to protect the earth on witch our greatest foundations are built the cornerstone of humanity is the earth and it is slowly crumbling we can not go to space and live on another planet because when mankind realizes what we have done it twill be to late for us to leave it all we must act now to save the earth wich needs us we all have a clean shot to pierce the heart of the cause of the earths destruction with the arrow of truth and faithfulness to this cause witch is not yet lost we can save the earth and all its life to be preserved for the generations of your great grandchildren dont you long to see the day when global warming is long forgot but this is not that day some of us may not see that day but today when the world is crashing down only we can start the fireing of arrows that will pierce the minds of proffesers and the heart of men who needlessly waste energy only we can save the earth from destruction
only we can start the fire of reconstruction thank you

sorry it kind of turned into a motivational speech

long runon! actually that was really one large run-on sentence, not more than two real sentences.

in addition to that huge run on paragraph don’t buy any wood that is not from a man-controlled forest (ie. don’t buy mohagony or rosewood from Brazil) and don’t buy or take any wild animals unless under a certified permit that IS approved by environmentalists or fish and game.don’t move on a habitat on a forest or a swamp, especially if an endangered animal lives there and use clean burning fossil fuils, or even better, renewable fuels eccept for biomass because it causes too much Co2 that destroys ozone in the mesosphere and stratosphere thus causing global warming to intensify the killing of large numbers of coral reefs that are home to millions of sea creatures that may one day benefit us by finding the cure for cancer and other related disease that affect the heart and destroy tissues of the homo sapien.

yeah, this affects turtles too.

Enjoy reptiles. But I would pick a career that actually puts food on the table. You would be hard pressed to find a herpetologist that makes better than 30k.

i dont think its alot to keep a turtle at all.you just have to look in the right places.i got a 100 gallon tank,a stand that even has cabinets to put all of my suppliies,2 uvb lights, plants, water heater, double filter, large turtle dock, and every other thing you could think of for only 50$ at a yard sale.i would never spend over 2000 dollars for all the needs of a 10$ water turtle.the only thing i had to pay monthly for was filters and turtle food.pretty cheap if you ask me.
