Help? I found this guy/girl today. I just took over a house in the Biloxi Mississippi area. When I was getting the pond operating I came upon this guy. There are many of them in the area. I am wondering if I should leave some food out for him, and what kind? I have a good deal of algae growing in the pond. Is there something I can get to abate the algae that would not harm the turtle. My wife wants me to get the turtle to "make more". Shall I play some Barry White in the back yard, or soft mood lighting? Just kidding, is there any company I should provide for him/her or fish to toss/place in there for him to eat? Is there any kind of mate I could get him/her? Thanks for any help. Sorry for the crummy format.

Help? it is an eastern box turtle. you don’t need to put any food in the pond, you could give it fruit and veggies and insects though.they are terrestrial turtles that spend a good 80% of their time on land and 20% of their time in water or moist places. they do not spend all their time in water, and almost no other turtles does either.like i say with snapping turtles, these box turtles will live for about 100 years and need alot of care when they become dependant on you and your generations as a food source so let it go. i don’t feel like typing a care sheet now so look at the care sheets on this website and keep in mind about UVB when you come across it on the care sheets because it is important for a turtle’s bone growth, if you do decide to keep it.btw if you keep it, you will need a 5 ft.x 5 ft. enclosure and a water bowl large enough for it to go into. do NOT put it in a glass cage.for mates, i would say release it in the nearest forest with the most eastern box turtles.or build a 10x 10 ft enclosure/your fenced backyard.males have red eyes while females have brown/dark black eyes. look very closely if you find a mate, and don’t put 2 red eyed (male) turtles together because they will fight over mates and territory and will injure or maybe even kill each other.

Help? Great, thanks for the help. I have this 6ft/6ft 3ft deep pond. She stays in the skimmer box area. The back yard is over 2,500 square feet of mature overgrown lush gardens. I have saved a few of turtles these from the road 3 blocks down. We are right on the back bay, so you see turtles all the time. I figured I would just leave her be. I believe she is living of the crickets and veg in the back yard. I am going to remove some plants, I just don’t want to take what she is eating out of the yard. I thank you for the help.
