 New rescue RES-with shell rot

bad case of shell rot in the new rescue RES-

campared to my healthy RES-

side to side comparisons-
healthy one on right side.

healthy one on bottom-

both are about 3 1/2 years old.it’s kind of weird because they are different sizes. my one that i raised myself is the healthy one. the rescue is the one with shell rot.i rescued it from my sister’s friend that had it in a 10 gallon. now they are in a 70 gallon.

any suggestions on how to treat it?

DO NOt keep it in the same cage as the healthy one.
it is more open to infections and bacterial diseases which will tranfere to your other turtle

I would 1 take it to a vet and get

Vitamin A water drops
HIGH CALCIUM SUP. diet
Much access to UVB as possible

Also clean cage out all the time and heavy filtration
also disolve and mix VitaminD3 Sup. with water.

Good Luck with em,!

can you buy any of those at petsmart or any petstore? i’m reluctant to go to the vet because they just give you a soap solution for shell rot and charge 70$. it wasn’t even an exotics vet.could i ask my mom’s friend that’s also a part time vet to get tose?

actually the sup. alone will make the water cloudy.
You need to disolve it in boiling water (teaspoon) then let it cool down in the fridge or whatever then pour it in the cage...dont forget the chlorine killer
I would do this once every 3 days or more.
All that other stuff you need and can et it at petcos petsmarts local petstores etc.

what is the calcium supplement anyway?just calcium dust?

so i just boil a teaspoon of the calcium sup. and cool it down in the fridge and then pour it into the tank.

what do i do with the water drops, like do i put it in the turtle’s food or put it in the water?

new turtles, healthy or unhealthy should never be housed with other turtles right away. i keep all my new turtles in their own tub for at least 30 days to make sure they are healthy before going in with my existing turtles.

i swear iv said this before in some of your other post.

could this be why your turtles always are sick gotee guy? im not trying to be rude at all so please dont take it that way. didn’t you just post something not long ago about some type of fungus going around to some of your turtles? forgive me if im wrong. i do get people mixed up in this forum.

You may want to get some better pictures im not convinced that that is shell rot looks like scutes that need to shed. try getting some better pictures of the area.

 New rescue RES-with shell rot

From the pics I agree in the shedding and not shell rot. And the pyramiding isn’t that bad.

Way to tell when it IS shell rot:

Rub your finger over the "white" or gray area. If any comes off on it then it is shell rot. If it looks white/gray and fuzzy it is shell rot. If it has a "dead animal" smell it’s shell rot.

What to do with shell rot:

Soak the turtle in a weak iced tea color mix of iodine and water for 20 minutes. You need the turtle in a warm area and the mix should just cover the entire shell. Do this daily for a week. At night put the turtle in a dark safe place and let it dry out. Shell rot is a fungus and grows in dirty water..letting the turtle dry out all the way will kill the fungus. Keep the turtle in an isolation plastic container...any plastic bin will work, with minimal junk in it. No filter needed. Basking area and that’s about it. Once the turtle is removed for the night, throughly clean the entire thing with iodine and water. Rinse it well. And let it dry out over night also. See a vet.

In severe cases the turtle would need shots of antibiotic. They can survive this bad a case but you’ll still be doing the soaking and cleaning thing as well as giving them shots that can kill their liver every other day. And trust me it’s work but it keeps them alive.

so this is bad care and pyramiding.

it was caused by having no basking spot, hardly any uvb, non-varied diet,no land area, and not the right temps.

thanks for the info about shell rot everyone.i might/probably will use it someday.

I hope the turtle gets better, I’m sure he will if you’re taking care of him instead of whoever had it before.
