 Musk and RES

1. how do i sex a musk turtle?

2. i went cast netting today(for turtles) and i caught a few yellow belly sliders and cooters, let them go, but i saw that one of them i caught was a non-indigenous RES.they are banned here in FL. i brought it home because i know they can overpopulate native species. it is the only one i have seen so far in that lake and it looks like it wasn’t let go as a pet, directly.should i keep it since it is not native and invasive? if i do keep it i will do the 30 day thing, i forgot what it’s called.

male head is usually larger
male tail longer and thicker
male cloaca further down tail than female

And as for they res, you can call local animal shelters, SPCAs or something OR because they now live in FL already... you could take it to western Fl were it is native...and also if you caught one red ear... there are TONS more and your removing of this animal may not make a difference anyway..and cause breeding seosons already over it has probably bred with other res or yellow bellies.
Good Luck with him
PS (dont keep him as a pet, if he grew up in the wild he deserves to stay in the wild)

oh. are you sure they’re native to western florida? northwestern florida? that’s where i live. it is only 4 or 5 in. long. i don’t think it could breed yet. it looks too small.why would it deserve to be in the wild if it was a pet?

id let it go. im sure it was happy where it was before you took it from its home..

if you do keep it yes id keep it away from your other turtles. maybe even have a vet check it out.
no telling if its healthy. even after 30 days.

i wouldnt even want another res but that’s just me.

i wouldn’t mind another res because all i’ve ever had are females and this is a male.maybe i could get it parasite free and then breed. and then let it go.

is it not legal to buy a pet? alot of petstores sell wild caught animals.

like reptilefreak23 said its like catching them with your hands. it doesn’t harm them. i let them go after anyways. the police probably aren’t going to hide in the bushes and wait for me to catch a turtle and give me a ticket. they have better things to do.i let them go 99 percent of the time anyway. i didn’t think this RES was indigenous to my state.but i was wrong so i also let it go today.

that’s good you let it go. i know your always one that preaches about not taking animals from the wild so you should stick with what you say..

And please dont breed your Res. there really is so many out there. no need to add more. i have nothing against res at all, i have a few myself. all mine were rescues tho. id never breed something so overpopulated.

i meant to breed so i could have experience with incubation. i would probably feed them to my water snakes and maybe just keep one. i just need more experience with incubating eggs because probably over half of my animals are pregnant or are breeding. like my water snake, leos, mediterranean geckos, mice, crickets, and next is probably going to be the skinks or legless lizards in few months.

I would do whatever you want, I mean it’s noy going to matter because if you let it go it will breed with other turtle insteadof yours so it doesnt really make a difference.

Th reason I don’t like lagless lizards are because they are kind of like snakes and I had a bad encounter with a Diamondback Rattlesnake and ever since then I’ve not liked them!

No, but it striked at me when I ran over it on my bike and it barely missed me! I didn’t even see it until it was to late.

wow, i almost got bit by a copperhead and a cottonmouth and i’m not even close to being scared of snakes anymore.or legless lizards for that matter.i was 5 inches away from being struck and i didn’t see the copperhead.when i saw it i put it in the closest thing, a water bottle, and let it go in a bunch of rocks, and that’s where i found the mom and dad of it. i didn’t do anything because i don’t kill snakes on purpose so i let them be and still frequently see them in these woods.

If I see a snake I don’t kill it I just try to scare it out of the way of others. I don’t know why I am, it’s just the way they move and everything. Plus I wouldn’t want to keep anything that can bite and kill or strangle. Legless lizards aren’t as bad they just look to much like snakes I wouldn’t be alowed to have a snake or anything like one because my sis and my dad don’t like snakes, but my mom thinks baby pytons are cool.
