 Turtle Pond?

Hi!

I’m usually floating around on other forums but I recently decided that at soume point I would like to have a turtle pond in my backyard. Does anyone have any tips, pictures or recommendations? I’ve got a pretty deep goldfish pond back there the used to have what I thought was a RES but was never really sure. Well the redear left at some point which I was happy about bc he ate my favorite goldfish. But now I’d like to make a nice little turtle habitat so does anyone have pointers? I’d like to maybe try redears or painted turtles but I’m not sure. Any help would be awesome!

I believe both painted or RES will eventually potentially eat all your fish in the goldfish pond. Did you plan on putting him in there, or making another pond?
How large is the pond in gallonage? Turtles need a minimum of 10 gallons per inch of shell (without other fish) as well as strong filtration. Painteds get up to 9 inches in shell length and a female red ear can get 12 inches.

What about winter? Are you where he’d need to come in during the winter, or in a warm climate? How deep is the pond too, ponds less than 24 inches can get either too hot and/or to cold as weather changes.

If you do don’t start out with baby turtles in an outdoor pond, because more than likely they’ll get eaten. And if you want to keep them around pet chicken wire at least 3-4 feet away from the pond surrounding it. Also t some chicken wire over the top of it so no predetors like racoons can get in.

 Turtle Pond?

The goldfish pond I wanna say is 300 gallons? something to that effect? but I was going to build a seperate pond for the turtle(s). I live in southern Ohio so yeah I would have to bring them in in the winter or have them be able to hibernate while outside. I would like to be able to let them hibernate outside simply because i’m not sure I’d be able to have room to keep turtles inside during the winter which is another reason why I’m asking you guys. I could probably manage it but i’ll cross that bridge when and if i come to it. I was told, "dig a big hole, put a liner down, put rocks on the liner, flip the liner over, put more rocks, repeat a couple times" basically for a turtle pond. sound about right? what sound the dimensions be? I was thinking 3 maybe 4 ft deep but wasn’t sure about how wide it would need to be.

You can google on how to make a turtle pond and you’ll come up with some good stuff. I have only 2 turtles and they’re both inside in a tank so I’m not completely sure.
