I have the 7 red ears, the melanistic, yellow belly and 3 cooters all in an outside pond. The pond is 18 foot long, 10 foot wide and 3 feet deep for the water with a 2 foot dirt area on the side, and a 5 foot by 5 foot planted/mulched area on the end. The other side and end are fenced. They stay out most of the year..I am in Florida, when it drops below 30 we bring them in...2 in a 100 gallon plastic bin. I do get eggs but we toss them...no babies yet they can have all the fun they want.

If reptile eggs are turned after the first 20 minutes after laying they die...no chance to grow into a baby. I don’t want red ear babies, or hybrid babies from them so we just get rid of them.

The sulcata does have severe pyramiding. He was found outside the Central Florida Zoo and they called and asked if I would take him. I did. We have no idea how he got that way....what exactly he was fed or how he was kept. He also had severely raw feet and once I got him he couldn’t walk because of it. I kept him in a baby playpen on towels and blankets for two weeks soaking his feet and putting antibiotic on them 4 times a day. He has now shown some normal growth, he’s on a stric diet of hay and grass with weekly pumpkin only. He is also outside in natural sunshine and planty of safe room to move around.

Only up to 20 minutes directly after they were laid can you turn them. The mom lays the eggs, they can be turned for up to 20 minutes...after that the egg hardens, and the embryo attaches to the shell...if you turn it then you will tear the baby from the shell and it will die.
