 Soft shell sickness

i have two wonderful softshell turtles. i went on vacation and had a lady feed my animals. when i came home my turtles were sick becaus the water was dirty (i hadnt changed the water before i left) thier food had gotten caught in the filter or something. i knowtist cleo (the younger turtle) was acting strange. she wont eat, she keeps her eyes shut, and she is skinny. like bone thin kinda skinny.
i dont know what to do i called all sorts of vets and animal specialist but no one knows about turtles.
my older turtle is acting fine but he has spots on the bottom of his shell that looks like sores. its red and puffy. shell rot maby? what can i do to help them? ... i cleaned the tank... thouroughly.

i don’t think it sounds like shell rot. i can only really tell if you post a pic or link of what it looks like. you shouldn’t even have 2 softshells together.

how long did you go on vaca? it takes a while for a turtle to become sickly skinny and or for shell rot to kick in.

ok the not opening eyes is due to bacterial infestion from the dirty water and can be helped with vitamin A drops in CLEAN water.
and as for the skinyness ... you wouldnt want to eat in that water...would you? thats the way the turtles feel and got them ’sick’ you just need to start putting them on a highrer protien diet with calcium sup every once in a while.
And because of this ’sickeness’ sometimes they may upchuck their last meal
Good Luck with them I hope he gets Better!

 Soft shell sickness

thanks for all your advice. i have had her for two years now. she has had proper care all her life and she has always been healthy. she died yesterday. my other turtle is recovering from his sores. i dont know what it was. i only assumed it was shell rot. and dirty water has never been a problem i keep my tank clean. the filter had gotten clogged up while i was gone on the week long vacation, so it was a mess. cleo didnt eat because she was sick i suppose. squirt, however, gained extra pounds from the food cleo set aside. why wouldnt you put two soft shell turtles together? mine have always gotten along. they were small turtles in a very large tank (120 gallons). now squirt is alone and he acts like he is looking for her. so what im asking is should i or should i not get another?

softies are very prone to infection if they even get the smallest cut. 2 together means that the chances are higher,if they accidentally scratch each other while trying to get food or in a fight.
