Turtle doesn’t like to swim
My new Red Ear Slider, Flash, doesn’t like to swim at all, all he does is hold onto the fake plant I have and bask. The plant is right beside the basking area so he doesn’t have to swim to get to it the only time he swims is if he is chasing food, which even then he doesn’t really swim that much. My other turtle, Slash, swims all the time. Do you think if I take the fake plant out for a while he’ll start swimming because before I had the fake plant Slash, my other turtle, didn’t have a place to rest and he swam non-stop.
PLEASE HELP!

Turtle doesn’t like to swim It’s probably better to err on the side of caution. Right now, if he decides he wants to swim, he has the option to do so. But if he’s got a pulled muscle or something like that making him want to take it easy for a while, he’s safe the way he is. Oh, he may well just be lazy, but laziness takes a long time to cause health problems. If he’s got an actual reason not to be swimming much, he could drown if you take the plant out. I’d play around with the setup, see if you can find soemthing that motivates him to swim more, but don’t get rid of the life preserver, just in case.

Turtle doesn’t like to swim
ok, also I cought him chewing on the black plastic tubing of the turtle dock while basking and I pushed him off the basking log, and then I noticed around where the tubing goes through the hole there is a peice of the styrofoam missing I can’t tel if it’s been chewed or has fallen of because I’ve been messing with the tank a lot. Can this make them sick if they chew on it?

Turtle doesn’t like to swim Yeah, if he’s still trying to pass indigestible material he might be feeling a bit of internal cramping. Odds are it’ll come out on its own, but anything that the problem exists with, you’ll want to switch things around so the temptation isn’t there any more. If he keeps doing it over and over and over again, the odds just aren’t with you anymore.

Turtle doesn’t like to swim it might be teething. i would get a turtlebone or cuttlebone for it to teeth on so it doesn’t get into bad habits of trying to eat/teeth on plastic docks, plants,or even gravel.

Turtle doesn’t’t like to swim
Right now he won’t eat. But I think the reason he won’t eat is because I do 50% water changes every Saturday, and since Monday I’m going to be at my grandmothers for a week, I just did a complete water change and put just enough Water so that they can bask on the log i have. And now I don’t think he likes the way it is. Also he had his mouth all the way open underwater, and I’ve never seen him do that before. Is he just drinking water?

Turtle doesn’t’t like to swim I cant recall my RES doing that mouth thing under water, but i know they have opened their mouths under water before so i doubt its a big deal, my razorback musk turtle is always opening his mouth under water and just sitting there.

Turtle doesn’t’t like to swim I dont know if he’s sick or not. Id make sure your water is warm enough (75 degrees) and his basking area is 85 degrees. ANd just wait and see. For turtles whove swollowed gravel I know giving thema pea to eat, helps flush them out, but Some real young turtles might not eat vegitation.
