Does any one keep snapping turtles?

I have this habit of running into people with wild caught baby turtles in poor enclosures and taking them home with me to rehabilitate them. Having said that I now have a baby alligator snapping turtle, and I am thinking of maybe keeping this one.

My question is: those of you who keep snappers, what is the best way to accommodate requirements of an aquatic turtle that can reach 25+" and way 100lbs+?

I may release him, but I’m not sure how well he would make it.

He is currently less than 2" wide and is on the same diet as my other "patient" which includes:Freeze dried river shrimp, pellet, earthworms, meal worms, tuffies(minnows), zucchini, cucumber, and crickets.

I have not known common or any type of snapper to have smooth shells.

But it may vary depending on the indivisual because of diet or genetics

You can buy stock tanks either online or a t a feed store. Rubbermaid makes a 300 gallon one which is perfect for a large snapper, for about $200.

In the meantime I know people who have them in preformed ponds inside or out. They are cute while they are small

The 2 determining factors on male or female are
the girth of the tail at the shell. Wider tail at shell means male. The distance of the waste disposal unit on the
tail is the over riding determination on male or female. The further down the tail it is....The more likely it is a Male snapper.
