i used it once and the turtles loved to burrow into the sand, but it was a real pain to clean.not to mention all of the bloodworms that also burrowed in it. i never had impaction though...i think i’ll try to use some different kind of sand again.

Well there are people on another forum I’ve been on lately and they said that’s one of the reasons why you should get sand, because turtle waste doesn’t get in it it just stays on top because sand is denser. And because sand can’t cause impaction because it’s such small grain. But they’re talking about the aquarium sand not hardware store sand. And I don’t mind cleaning it, because I used to have to clean my tank every 5 days before I had a filter so I don’t mind. I know you have to clean it out for like 15-20 minutes to get the dirt out. And I already know how to clean it once a month. And I don’t feed my turtle any worms because they just freak out and go the other way.

To PcBuilder14: You mentioned you know how to clean out your tank once a month!? I’m currently trying to figure this one out. Could you share this process with me?

And also, where do you find aquarium sand??
Is it possible to gravel vac clean the sand??

I mean I already know how to clean out the sand when I clean out the tank every month. Any store that has to do with fish and aquariums. I don’t know about that last question.

make sure you have a sand friendly filter. sand can really mess up a filter.

I for egg laying use
a 3/4 sand 1/4 soil with some gravel and sphagnum moss (12 inches deep)

As long as your intake hose is far enough away from the bottom there shouldn’t be any problem. But anytime you’re doing anything with sand you have to turn your filter off. Like when you’re pouring the sand in, mixing it up to release the gases it creates, or taking the sand out and stuff.

Here’s a pic of someones tank and who gave me the idea, and told me how to get it non-cloudy and everything.

first off... you cant just do that with plain ol sand.( regular sand never settles down do to the turtles move, ents and filter)
You can buy river bed sand which is safe for the animal and very attractive

You pretty much can as long as the sand isn’t for saltwater tanks.Actually people use play sand to like the kind that goes into snad boxes to, I don’t want to use the sand box sand because it takes a lot longer to clean, because there is a lot more dust. Others us that sand you buy at a hardware store it’s just coarse, dustier, and you have to pick out the gravel. I’m going to get this kind because it’s the only kind that can be used for freshwater tanks. And it is the easist to clean compared to the other kinds of sand I mentioned. And by the way I’m getting the white kind not the black.

What about vacuuming the riverbed sand?? Is this sand easily picked up by the siphon on a these vac’s?? I currently use the Python No Spill vac.

I’m pretty sure it doesn’t as long as you don’t put it right up against the sand. People use them gravel-vacs and use it to suck the turtle waste off the top of the sand and it never really sucks up sand.

I could have got sand today, but I didn’t have enough money and my mom didn’t want to spend that much because we were already buying a large bag of dog food and cat food. I will get it next time we go to town though. Sometime this week, like in 3-5 days.
Here’s is the best kind to get in my opinion for freshwater tanks. It was the only freshwater sand they had, which was what I wanted anyway. It’s $26 for the 20 lb bag so be sure to print out this page so they’ll price match it.

don’t use cichlid sand! even though african cichlids are freshwaer the sand really raises the PH so the water will be very alkaline. Just make sure u use freshwater sand not for cichlids. I have had many bad experiences with sand. my turtles live in a pond and are happy with the gravel that blows in from the wind.

Shows how much you know, people that already have sand and they said that that is great. Some people even use sandbox sand and pavers sand. So I think you may need to get you facts straight.

I didn’t know it was bad for geckos because my pet store has sand in pretty much every reptile tank they have.

it’s bad for the younger ones, it can cause compaction, and getting the sand out is hard, and stressful to the gecko.

if you want to get a leopard gecko, you can just have him in a ten gallon but I would suggest larger, like a 20. They don’t need as much space as turtles do.

I may get one in 4 years or so, when I get out of my parents house. I don’t think they knew that when I got one it would need a big tank, so now I know I can’t get another one. Also the biggest tank I’ll be able to get until I get out of the house is a 50 gallon long tank. I’ll be out of the house in around 4 years. Do you think it will last that long?

Are you fourteen? well if you’re asking if the tank will last for four years i’m sure it will, s long as you clean it and don’t break it. (if thats what your asking) Ill be leaving my parents house in about 4 years to.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I was asking, and yes I’m 14. I’ll probably get it sometime at the end of next year probably. I know this is bad, but they will have to stay in the 10 gallon until I get the 55, or I might try to get a 75 gallon for $210 with hood and light instead of a 50 gallon with hood and light for $120.

the good thing about leopard geckos is they’re easy to care for and don’t need that much space.
