 Showing Affection!!?!?!?

Just recently, my girlfriend and I noticed our 2 pet red ear sliders doing something that looked REALLY neat!! Now I’ve read MANY online articles and care sheets, and lots of books. But I’ve never read anything about this little "thing" they do!
What they’ll do, is get right in front of each other, and practically touch noses, and wiggle their "hands" really fast in front of one another! Almost as if they were two kids playing patty cake or something!
Has anyone else ever seen this?? And most importantly "WHAT" are they doing!!

I believe that they may be exhibiting a courting ritual.

Yes, it is a courting ritual, for adults.
It may be territorial...if they are just a few inches long and are doing the fluttering thing,a different species(most of the time, although RES sometimes crossbreed),a large size difference (like 4 in. male to 10 in.male),etc.
Do you know what sex your RESs’ are?How long are they?
If you don’t know how to sex a RES here’s how.
Look at their claws.A male’s claws will be alot longer than a female’s claws.
With my experience a female is also a bit bulkier than a male,or the male a bit slimmer. When fully grown a female will also be a few inches longer than a male.
And last of all, if you see one lay eggs, ovbiously, it is female....or bisexual.
I know i left something out...

The tail’s butthole is closer up on thefemales tail, like right up against the shell and the males is farther down.

Well if they are both males, that mostly means aggresion. I know it doesn’t look like aggresion at all. But that’s how males say, " Get out of my territory!". And that’s also how they show that tey want to mate to females. Whatch for fighting between the 2 just in case.

Ok Ok ,.. I refuse to believe that they are "fighting". It just couldn’t be, cause they’re constantly playing around chasing one another. I have them right next to my monitors so I get to see them all the time. I’ve never seen any sign of them fighting or nipping at each other. I’ve spoiled the heck out of them, and have provided them everything by the book. So, I’d say their happy. They are VERY playful, far from scrawny and have lots of swimming space. If I didn’t know any better, I’d even say that I witness them playing hide and go seek at times! It may sound ridiculous, but cats do it. Dogs do it. Why can’t turtles??

To answer a few questions asked on the above responses:
They are aproximetely 4-5 months young.
** Captive bred males mature at 2-4 "years", and females at 3 1/2.
Their carapace size are 4.5" (female x1) and 4" (male x1)

Anyone, please advise.

Okay. Good they sound like they’re healthy and happy! I bet they’re spoiled! I would like to say mine are spoiled but they don’t have a big tank. Only 10 gallon!

No offense to you,
I very much took your response into consideration, and i apologize if i came on a bit arrogant.
I actually started off really bad buying them from a street seller not having a clue on how to take care of them. Proud I am. The point I was simply trying to make was that maybe, just maybe that little patty cake act they pull off could be a playful little thing they do. My pointing out that I spoil them was just to suggest and consider probability.

Oh, I didn’t think you were being arrogant I would have done the same thing. I would hate to like, have 2 turtles, and then turn around and having to seperate them.

Thats exactly how i feel. I was just so curious about that little thing they do. I’m leaning more over to the "courting ritual" suggestions though. They don’t sexually mature until much later, but I’ve actually seen really small pups hump other pups. They won’t get nowhere with it, but I guess its pretty much the same with other animals.

Thanx for the advise bro,...

I’ve always wondered why they do that to rocks. I think it’ll be funny if and when mine gets older and is male.

Well if your turtles are doing that, they probably are males, even if they’re young, that is a male way of showing he wants to mate but tince yours is so young , it’s probably instinctively practicing.

Well whatever it is, it looks cute as hell! Baby Turtles Rock ! My favorite out of all my animals! My girlfriend and I ALSO call them "turtle kisses". One thing I can never do is catch a good photo of them doing it. So 10 points to whoever can post one up!

Thanks to everyone for the reply!
