Need ideas for another turtle for the future.

I have a 55 gallon tank right now with an Tiger Oscar over 1 ft long and still growing, Raphael Striped Cat 5 inches and full grown, Leapord Pleco 10 inches, and Bristle Nose Pleco 5 inches full grown. I had two painter turtles 5 yrs old around 5 inches wide had them since they hatched by a lake in there with the fish for over a year and they all got along very well no fighting at all. Well I dont have the money for a bigger tank at the moment and all them fish and turtles in a 55 gal isnt very fair for them. I am deploying to Iraq in less than a month for 15 months and got rid of the dirtiest animals in there so the tank would be easier to take care of for my wife while I am gone. When I get back I am gong to buy a 150 gallon tank to put my fish in and I want to buy another trutle to go in there with the the fish. I do not want another painter or a red eared slider. I would say I am pretty experienced in turtle care and will have 15 months to study up on there habits before I get another one.(One thing I hate people who buy animals that dont know how to take care of them!!!) One turtle I was wondering about is a snapper. Dont know to much about them right now but if I were to get one when it was smaller and had it grow up with the fish would the turtle still go after them when it is bigger? If a snapper doesn’s work out anybody have any ideas for different turtles I could think about getting? Any help would be appreciated. Also sorry post was so long just wanted to let you know about the situation I am in to help you out a little more. Thanks for all your help.

Jon

A snapper will definentley go after fish. some of the smallest turtles i think are musk turtles and mud turtles. But they have to have shallow water.

if they are pretty big fish then a baby RES or Painted wont eat them if they grow up with them... my cichlid and painted grew up together... they are the same size and are best friends lol

i’m suprised your cichlid didn’t get over territorial and attack your turtle. My cichlids are very aggresive, they attack fish bigger than them. My RES doesn’t seem to eat the goldfish I have in my pond either.

If you do get one get a painted turtle over a Red ear slider, don’t get me wrong I like RES, I have 2 myself, but Painted turtles are smaller when they’re adults than RES.

I’ve heard that they say about 6 inches and are less agressive than RES.

You probably couldnt have this with fish but a male spiny soft shells are great turtles if you get them as babies because if you get it as an adult it will be really nippy but if you hold them alot when they are young they dont bite too often

you could get a map turtle mine doesn’t attack my sucker fish or my cichlid because their close in size, but the cichlids don’t go for my turtle either.

we had to give them to someone else because they were making the the tank WAY to messy eating all the food and we didnt have another tank for them but i had 6 goldfish that lived perfectly with my cichlid and turtle... they lived together for almost a year with no conflicts... the 2 small ones were pipsqueak and berry, they were kind of small, surprised they survived, Tiger, Ivory, and Shadow were good sized goldfish, and Freddy the biggest one, was HUGE!
