are you sure that’s an eastern map? it looks exactly like mine. mine is a northern map.

thats what my petersons feild guide said it actually didnt mention a northern map at all

I do beleive both northern and eastern extreemly simalar and are both subspecies of what used to be ’the common map turtle’ prior to 2001
so really it could be either, you might not know till he gets older.
and yes that is a midland painted.

I too have a petersons field guide... and a couple other kinds.
And they reffer to both as subspesies of the common map.

kind of like red ear and yellow belly sliders are subspecies of the pond slider

hmmm did not know that yea i knew about the common my bio proffessor does studies on them in the local rivers and streams and is tracking there numbers and he dsaid there is a healthy population in our area but ya knwo what was wierd when i was finding him in the petersons the head markings were right on common but the belly markings were exactly like the mississippi map but yea my feild guide must be out dated lol

your map’s eyes look a little different.maybe that’s a way to tell them apart.

it could be gottee
but remember eyes are the most complicated thing on the body of any human or animal
and cameras are not always very acurate with the eyes... so that could be something but I really have no idea
