 55 gallon?

Ok so I have a empty 55g tank and I have been looking into getting a turtle. I would really like to know if there are any species that can live their whole life in this size of a tank?
I just need some ideas so I can start doing research.

P.S Thanks in advance!!!!!!!

 55 gallon?

no, they’d still need a 110 gallon tank.

musk turtles and mud turtles stay relitively small.some can live their whole lives in a 55 gallon long, but have to have it shallow because they are bad swimmers compared to other turtles. commonb musk turtles,3 striped mud turtles, etc.

10 GALLONS PER INCH OF TURTLE.
a 5 inch turtle needs a 50 gallon tank.easy and simple as that.

what’s with all these people asking if they can keep their turtle in a 50 or 55 gallon tank?

 55 gallon?

Well I wanted to know before hand in case I could not get a bigger tank for the turtle.

People come to the forum to ask questions I am being responsible by asking before I go ahead and dump a turtle in to a unsuitable tank. I am not one of those people who get the turtle and then ask questions.
And seeing how my tank is a standard 55g I am not going to put a turtle in it unless I can get a bigger tank for when it has grown out of it.

Try not to get snappy when someone is being responsible and asking questions before they actually get the animal.

P.S. Thank you for the advice and help!!!!!!!

 55 gallon?

African sidenecks/African helmeted turtle would be good because they get at a max of 8 inches... and they are mud turtles so they like to stay on the bottom and the water needs to be pretty low so they dont have to swim to get to the surface :) also u cant resist their googly eyes piggy nose and big printed smile... their awesome :) but they are also kinda lazy so dont get them if u want a super active turtle although they are pretty active...

 55 gallon?

I would say male Texas map turtle. The problem with putting a 4 inch mud turtle in a shallow 55 gallon is that it isn’t a 4 inch turtle with 55 gallons of shallow water: it’s a turtle with maybe 20 gallons. Map turtles can enjoy it deeper, and male Texies are only four inches or so; you can fit perhaps 45 gallons of water in there and still have room to climb out. Probably without even having to build a seperate compartment outside on top, but in a worst case scenerio you could always still have that as a backup plan, if he turned out to disagree with us on how much room he needs. (The turtles don’t always read the same rulebook that their owners did.)

A lot of other small turtles, like spotted and Reeves, like very large walking areas in addition to their water, so narrow and tall just isn’t the way to go with them.

However, if you are willing to do the external cage on top, you can fill a 55 all the way and very probably do a male painted with no problem.

Some people might also say a male diamondback. They’re small enough to conform to the ten gallon per inch rule, but they’re so active I just can’t see it. Mine’s about four and half inches long, has about sixty gallons of water, and would go insane if he had any less.

You’re smart to think long and hard before getting one. People who buy turtles that are going to want more room than is feasible today tend to wind up with turtles that want more space than is feasible tomorrow. And then get completely baffled that nobody wants to adopt their slider and pay for a 200 gallon tank for it.

 55 gallon?

The pet stores around here only sell hatchlings of everything that they carry. Can you sex them?

it’s harder to sex turtles at a hatchling age,but males have longer nails and tails than females, and are shorter than females when fully mature.
