make it a twenty long if you can with 1/4 WATER AND 3/4 SAND and dirt. the sand and dirt should be atleast 7-8" and because of this late breeding you may get eggs in september and october... BUT SET UP THE CAGE NOW start feeding her more and make sure she dosnt get stressed out by sudden change in temerature etc... Good Luck! |

REMEMBER the eggs nay take 3-5 months to hatch. PS some prefer to lay eggs under leaf litter instead of sand or drt so provide that too. MY PERSONAL oppinion on best sand or dirt substrate to use is recycled coconut fiber forest bedding substrate. (bought in little brick than add water and follow instructions on package.) this is soft easy to burrow in, and conceals heat extreemly well Good Luck! |

i only have spare 10 gallons and critter keepers. i’ll put them in a 40 gallon rubbermaid instead i know how to get the coconut fiber/bedabeast to get moist and puff out. i’ll get some tommorow. for now i use a mix of dirt and sand from outside, since i got 1 from the lake here and my friend gave me one,i’m guessing from outside.i know i always put magnolia and oak leaves in the dirt and on top of it so they don’t get as much dirt into the water and if they want to hide/lay eggs in it. if i do get eggs i’ll let most of the hatchlings go. do you breed or have musk turtles? |

when i came home from school i found she put the substrate back like it was,she covered the hole up with the ecoearth.and no leaf litter was on top.i was just about to dig it up to see if there were eggs when i saw she was also burried about 1/2 inch under the soil, just part of her back sticking out. so,is she still laying eggs(laying them in the soil),guarding the eggs(if they even do that?),having a false "pregnancy",or just in the mood to burrow and hide because hurricane fay is coming here tomarrow? but i know i saw them mate like at least 6 times. and also is the female supposed to be smaller than the male, because that’s how i saw it? pics will be here in a few minutes. |

Just remember... if you dig up the eggs dont accidentally poke or turn them while moving dirt. Good luck! |

pics coming now. this is the breeding cage that i temp. moved them to for a day,but i noticed they weren’t mating and always trying to get out so i moved them back to the original cage with the baby Northern Map(i have no where else to put him, safely). and added a bowl of ecoearth to the basking spot.
with hurricanes many turtles and animals burrow, hide, etc. i see that squirrels are getting ready for the storm, last year my box turtles would all burrow into the deepest part of their substrate,so i don’t know about this one, maybe she senses the hurricane’s coming or not, since she is wild caught. |
