How do i stop this behavior?

i’ll start from the beginning.

3 weeks ago i didn’t want my turtles(mostly just the RES) to beg so much and to have to work and find their food.
so i used turtle food that sinks to the bottom of the tank and i hid it in corners and stuff.that’s not really the point though.

well, i would just ignore them when they begged and i tried to get them scared of me,it hardly worked, but still a bit of progress. i thought it was useless though.
so i kept on having them to work for food and i thought of an idea. i put the food on their land area since i know water turtles can’t eat on land so they would bring the food to the water and eat it.
BIG mistake!
now all of my turtles think there is food in their land area so they constantly go in and out of land and water tracing leaves, sand, and dirt into the water part of the tank.
i now do not put food up there but they still go in and out, mostly just carrying shoots and buds of seeds i planted in there weeks ago into the water and eating them.
i need advice or help on how to slow down this behavior?!
i never know if one of my turtles will have eggs so i can’t remove the box. i put lots of leaves on top of the dirt but they just move the leaves away and get to the soil.
i tried leaves and putting rough rocks to the entrance so they will get some dirt rubbed off by the rocks but there’s still always bits of leaves and dirt in the water! i constantly have to net out the leaves and dirt,
so any advice appreciated!

to stop the behavour is simple, stop putting the food on the land
the other question the only way I can answer is construct your own little land water seperation device (dam)
and make it a little higher than the sand level so sand can fall over. than make a ramp so the turtles can get over the it on to the land and Vise-Versa
Good Luck!

i dont see the big deal. why not just feed them normal? why must they "work" for their food? its a turtle..not a dog.

i dunno maybe im crazy but i just feed them when they are scheduled to feed.

i see what you mean RF about the dam thing and i’ll try to make something like what you said.
i have already stopped putting food in the land area, but they think food is still there.
i don’t want this behavior because they constantly trace dirt and sand back into the water which is a pain to clean up.
i like tame turtles but turtles that are tame usually beg like there’s no tomarrow.

well i’ll take a video of them being so crazy about begging for food.

i want them to be able to work for their food to cut down on the begging and so it’s more natural like in the wild.

ya... they will have to chase fish and stuff... that is what I do with all my turtles.... but I think it is fun to hand feed them plus they are not in the wild but its your choice

frog season is rapidly slowing down. they are all frogletts but hardly any tadpoles. i will just have to wait until next spring and early summer to get some but thanks everyone for the ideas.
