a friend of mine go given turtles that were in a very sorry state by a woman who did not know how to keep them. When my friend got them water was just over there shell and very dirty. They had no dry land nor a basking point . They had a uv but i dought it was the right or that it was less than six months old. i am now caring for them one is about 3 1/2" inches (shell lenght) the other is abit smaller.Together me and my friend reserched them (using mainly the terrapin tank site) and they now have
a slightly larger tank, which i know is still quite a bit too small and i will be buying a big plasic tub(are they okay to use) asap ???using the rule 40liters per inch of shell plus 20 liters per inch of shell for any additional turtle a a size rule????
a basking platform
basking light
external filter
reptiglo 5.0 does it need to be higher???( most of the suff we use we had lying around as both me and him already have reptiles
within two days of putting the baking light/paltform in they where using it.and i am feeding them repto min and romaine lettuce(??BAD) they both have great appertites. What vitermins do they need i have already nutrobal and calypso. The main thing how ever i am worried about is there health what are the main ways in turtles to tell if they are sick/unhealthy??
here are a few pics of setup

thanks

plasic rubbermaid tubs are fine and they come in large sizes.
reptiglo 5.0 is good for turtles, not too little and not too much.
rpmaine lettuce and turtle sicks are fine. also feed guppies & rosy red minnows, insects, collared greens and fruits, etc.
i dont know what calypso and nutrobal are, maybe someone else can help out,but also get half a teaspoon of calcium dust and mix it in some water, then pour it in the tank.it will give them extra calcium,in the water. don’t give too much though.

well signs of bad shell and skin look like this.

shell rot and a type of skin fungus-

bad care,bad diet,what it does to a turtle’s shell-

normal turtle-

Sounds like you’re doing a lot right and trying to help the best you can. If you can raise the water as high as possible but low enough so it can’t crawl out that would give more swimming room wich I know he’d/she’d like. Like Gotteeguy said rubbermaids work great, just make sure you add support to the side of themm once you get to about a 30 gallon rubbermaid, otherwise they will bow out and eventually bust. Not good.
