 Turtles for Beginners?

I’ve been thinking about getting a turtle. What would a good turtle for beginners be? Can you provide pictures and some info? I really don’t know much about turtles or turtle care as of now so I want a starting point and maybe a specific turtle to start researching.

Thanks!

for a small turtle to keep, research the 3 striped musk turtle.it stays relitivly small, under 5 inches so a 50 gallon tank would be suitable for life.just make sure if you get musk or mud turtle that the water shouldn’t be more than 10 inches deep since they’re generally bad swimmers, but love to cling on to plants and hides.
just keep in mind if ,you miss these, you will need a UVB light and basking lamp,
and 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle (ie 5 inch turtle needs a 50 gallon tank,12 inch turtle needs a 120 gallon tank.

The catch there is that a 50 gallon tank with ten inches or less of water in it is no where near 50 gallons. It’s more like 20.
A painted turtle, preferably male, preferably southern (southerns, the smallest subspecies, have a red stripe down the back) will make better use of all three dimensions. Still, plan on eventually getting a tank at least four feet long.
Painted turtle care is very similar to slider care, which makes them easier to troubleshoot with than a lot of other smallish types such as maps, muds, musks, diamondbacks, reeves, and so forth.
