Is Algae-killer safe for baby turtles? Be very careful with that algae killer. It is not meant to be used on a regular basis. It is meant as a last resort after you’ve tried everything else. Using the algae killer often will cause distress to your turtles (and plants and fish.) Some of the things you can do to help control the algae is to get a GOOD filtration system; you can never have too much filtration with a turtle. The better your water is filtered, the less dissolved waste there will be in the water for the algae to eat. Depending on the species of turtle you have, you can add some "aquarium salt" to the water (algae has a difficult time growing in it.) Some turtles can tolerate brackish water conditions, and ONLY on those species do you use this aquarium salt method! You can add a waste degrader to the water to help your filtration system work more efficiently, as the degrader will break up the turtle’s waste more quickly into smaller, more manageable size, which will, as stated earlier, keep the water quality less to the alga’s liking. Also, be sure that you are doing regular partial water changes to keep the water quality good. There is a few other things you can try, but I would suggest that you start with the things listed above, and if those don’t work well enough for you I can suggest more. (I’ve listed the easiest and most effective ways to control the algae.)
