Ok, so I made my way here... RES question.

I normally stick to the leopard gecko board... Anyway, it’s been some time since Ive thought about turtles but tonight I decided I def wana get one. I’ve always been fascinated by RES’s and have been told that they’re one of the best to get because they relatively easy to care for and they’re perfect swimmers so no need to worry over drowning (yes I know this also depends on what you have for them to climb out on). Well, like I said its been some time since Ive thought about turtles and a lot of my links for other sites are now dead. So... Let me start by asking this one question then after I get my answer I can start putting together a list of questions to get answers for my now dead links / posts on other sites.

Oh, first I wana say that I don’t have a large amount of room to play with but I do have room to use for a decent tank.

So here goes with the question,
Whats the smallest (plz list dimensions / gallons) tank I could go with to keep a RES in for life but also what would be the ideal size.

I def wana get one RES maybe two so when replying please list the following...

1. Smallest tank possible for one RES but what would be the ideal size.
2. Smallest tank for two RES’s but also what would be the ideal size.

Please list the overall dimensions as well as the gallon size when replying, Ty.

i don’t measure aquariums dememsions and you didn’t ask in what type of dimention (area, perimiter, volume?) (centimeters, meters, yards, feet, inches?).

a 120 gallon tank is the minimum size tank for a RES. two fully grown RES would need a 240 gallon tank.
it would be alot easier to get a pond instead.

it depends on the species, but some mud or musk turtles can live in a 50 gallon tank filled to the top, or a 100 gallon tank filled halfway.they’re not great swimmers so a 100 gallon tank filled half way is prefered.

Ok, so I made my way here... RES question.

A male Red Ear Slider would need somwhere between 75-100 gallons. And a female would need somewhere between 100-120 gallons. But if you are tight on space or money like me, my turtle might stay in the 55 gallon I just got him for the rest of his life.

Here’s a pic of it. I’m getting a background soon.

@Gottee guy

As for what form of measurements I meant inches (overall tank size LxWxH). The reason I asked for measurements is because that I know one tank lets say a 55 gallon just for example purposes can have atleat 4 if not more different sizes. Anyway, I suppose I can stick with just one turtle for now this way I dont need an insane size tank or a reason to build a pond which I eventually wana do anyway. I was just considering geting two because I kinda remember hearin somethin once that turtles get lonely lol.

Also, I read other replies here about Muds’s and Musk’s but I’ve already made up my mind about 3 years ago that if I ever get a turtle I def want it to be a res. Them being excellent swimmers was also a factoring reason behind my firm decision to get a RES.

@PcBuilder14

First, nice tank and what kinda plant is that... Anacharis ? Also it’s not that I’m really tight on space although you could say I am in a way I just dont have alot of options for re-doing my room heh. But ya from what I’ve been reading it seems the bare minimum I would need for one RES as a lifer would be at bare minimum 80 gallons.

I suppose the next question here would be what is the overall size of a full grown male / female RES. I imagine the males are smaller from what I’ve seen posted around here. When I’m ready to buy one I would be buying a baby about the size of a quarter. The site I’ve been looking at and have had bookmarked for some time now is turtlesale .com

Well on average a male gets as big as 9 inches. But they can get bigger in some cases.
Females on average get as big a 12 inches, but they also can become bigger in some cases.

The space thing is the same for me. I have room I just can’t use it because of all the exra crap in my room!LOL!

And yes that’s a fake Anarchis.

I’ll post pics on here of it in a little bit has no bubbles on it and looks a bit different.

So size wise a male would be the best option for me or anyone really, but ya even the fake anacharis looks good. When I’m ready to go out and do this I’m gonna use some real anacharis in my tank that way the lil guy(s) have some plants to snack on. I still would like to maybe get two but there’s that whole tank size thing comes in assuming 10 inches per male that’s 20 inches of turtle with two of em. The main reason for me considering two is because I read / heard once that RES’s can get somewhat lonely and like most animals loneliness can lead to depression and an early death.

Also, when you post more pics later post some shots of you lil guys swimmin around or somethin heh

I like how turtles are like my two female leopard geckos in the sense that when you stare them directly in the face they look like theyr smiling all the time because the way their mouths are built.

This is one thing I’d def be getting for the basking light, seems it would be much safer than cliping it to the side of the tank.

Yeah some people use them. I went the cheap way!

The thing about them getting lonely is wrong. Even if you get 2 baby Red Ear Slider at the same time later on the more than likely will become aggressive even if you have a large enough tank. Just get one and spoil the heck out of it!

Later I am planning on getting a live Anarchis to.

As far as I know, 55s only come in the 48X13X21 size, which is pretty small for a slider. Especially if you only have about 40 galons of water in it. They’re a good starter size for babies, but ultimately you’re going to want either a pond or a livestock trough. Unless you’re friends with a glassworker or just get really, really lucky and find a huge tank for sale used the three-digit tanks tend to be prohibitively expensive. Also, large-gallon tanks are insanely heavy. A 150-gallon weighs over 300 pounds when it’s completely empty! If it’s even half full, you’re talking about over half a ton of weight on a section of floor about six feet by two feet. if you’re not sure you’ll always have a basement, shopping for something lighter with a wider floor distribution, such as a plastic garden pond, may be more practical.
About turtlesale, you might want to look over what customers have had to say about them.
Just so you know.
Reading from the top of the page, it’s the second one listed.

I’ll look over that link now, and I have heard a ton of horror stories myself about Turtlesale. With that said what other websites can you order baby RES’s from and good point about the fghting thing I got lucky with my two Leo’s. Theyre both females but love eachother.

As for what you said about weights with and without water, if its a decently built home most floors can take that kinda weight even with a full tank. If a tanks wide enough you can get it ontop of two floor beams. As for me just for sake of argument, regardless of the tank size I get and yes it will be a big one but regardless of size I’d be filling it like most people here any anywhere else do. I’d fill it to about within 8 inches of he top of the tank.

The main thing for me to do before anything else is just find an appropriately sized tank that could house a male RES for life, assuming the 9" or so is about right for a full grown male.

Ya alot of those stories arent so hot, but anyone reading this happen to have any good links or excellent sites to buy baby RES’s from at a decent price ?

Also, using this lsit of glass tanks for size reference only what would be the smallest tank to go with to put a male RES in as a baby but have it be sutible for a life tank. Please copy and paste the overall dimensions of your "choice", Thank you.

I’ll check that over and give them some calls. Thx ;-)

Also the web adress says pareptileexpo is this expo in Pennsylvania by chance if so that would be cool because I live in Meadville. The only thing is with a few of the expos I looked at in the past they were like 3 hrs drives one way lol.

Also, when anyone gets a chance please look over the last link I posted and post your thoughts on what you feel is the smallest tank possible to put one RES in for life but also what you feel would be the best. I’d like atleast 4 peoples input on this, Thx ;-)

I think this would bes the smallest.

Number-------Length-------width-------Height------Capacity
RGA361830---36 inches---18 inches---30 inches---85 gallons

And this would be the best.

Number-------Length-------width-------Height------Capacity
RGA361848---36 inches---18 inches---48 inches---135 gallons

Looks good but I was having a few different thoughs going by past suggestions...

This is what I was figuring.

RGA602424 60 24 24 150

or

RGA722424 72 24 24 180

Seems like your suggestions are close to what I was figuring just more taller than anything else. I was figureing on a 24 high I could fill to 18 inches and use the rest for basking spot while keeping it low enough so not to allow the turtle to climb out.

I’d lean toward that second one, the 180, if you’re confident the weight’s not a problem and you’re willing to go that high. 72 inches will give him an extra few kicks before he has to turn around again, and it’s enough room that you can keep playing around with accessories and "redecorating" so he doesn’t get bored.. I’m not a slider guy, but those 36 inch ones would drive even my little 4.5" diamondback stir-crazy, so I just can’t see using them as a permanant home for an even larger species that’s almost as active.

Ya, but is the height ok though... I know that 24 wide is good enough (i think) but is 24 high ok. As for weight that shouldn’t be an issue I mean if anything all I should have to do is get a floor reinforcement done and that’s the easy part.

These are some others I’m looking at... they’re more or less the same as the others I posted just shorter in overall length. I mean I wana long tank just not so long that its ridiculous.

     Item #           L      W     H      Gal
RGA482430     48     24     30     150
RGA482436     48     24     36     180

Well, I checked it out lastnight and I think it said it was a 4hr and change drive from me and honestly I’d sooner buy from turtlesale then drive that far ;-/

I’m still trying to make up my mind on a tank... I mean I kinda got the perfect width & height in mind which is 30W x 30H I just need to find a length thats PERFECT for the lil guy(s) but not so long that its funny... I’m trying to decide between a 4, 5 or 6 footer.
