on spring break i saw a dead hawksbill sea turtle near apalachicola, florida. it was about 1 1/2 to 2 feet long. it was decaying in a clump of rocks in the state park and its feet and head was missing but the shell and legs remained. anyone know why this happened and are hawksbills rare? i didn’t even know they lived around there.

Hawksbill sea turtle
They are an endangered and federally protected species the loss of head could be due to predators in the area coyotes based on your description. It could have beached it’s self from being ill with a respiratory problem . They do not normally beach themselves enless they are sick. If you haven’t already google state of Florida and contact department of fish and wildlife & game and have them recover the carcass.
