Pics of my turtle, please help identify

I am trying to find out exactly what kind of turtle Frank is, even though the care for them is very similar.

Here are a bunch of pics cuz some different aspects than others. I have one of his underbelly cuz my brother n law thought it was a painted turtle until I showed him there is no red under him. He doesn’t have a bunch of stripes, just the stripe on either side of his head that meets at his nose area. Can’t wait to hopefully find out what species he is :)

Yeah its an Asian box turtle, Cuora amboinensis. They get about 5-6 inches for males and a bit larger for females . They are best kept semi aquatic with a large shallow water area where they are almost submerged and then a small land area where they can be completely dry. They do need UV lighting and a good basking lamp. Also they are from Southeast Asia so they like to be kept in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. They aren’t very picky eaters though and will eat anything suitable for an omnivorous aquatic turtle.
The extra large rubber maids make a good enclosure for only 25 dollars unless you have an extra 40-50 gallon tank lying around.
Good luck
Andrew

Yes looks like a malasian box. I found a site that has a picture of him/her :) http://www.turtlepuddle.org/cuora/amboinensis.html
I can’t see the plastron very well in your pick, but that site will tell you what to look for :) hope that helps!

Its best for its kind to be in an outdoor enclosure or large Rubbermaid or sterilite tub. Glass cages don’t do well for tortoises/box turtles. A correct outdoor enclosure is the most enjoyable to any keeper and much more beneficial to her.

I live in Illinois, where it gets below zero in the winter and really is only above 60 for 4 months of the year, it is not possible to keep him/her in an outside enclosure all the time. I can set up something outside and inside. I have an extra almost clear rubbermaid tote I just found. How do I set up something outside to make sure no other animals can get into it? We have lots of squirrels, rabbits and other small animals around. He stays in the water almost all of the time. I have never actually seen him bask on the rock I have set up. Frank enjoys fighting with his reflection in the aquarium glass, I love it. I think its a him (otherwise I should change the name, lol).

Most people that set up outside enclosures would have it fenced off. You can also use a homemade large wood box or cinder blocks to make a small fence and you can attach a screened lid. Some people also use the chainlink dog kennels/pens and just put boards along the inside bottom or bricks to keep the turtle from seeing out and trying to escape all the time, i think those can also be fitted with a top. With him being mostly a water lovin turtle he’d need a pond area in the enclosure. That can be done with a large plastic tote, stock yard water tank, small plastic pond (all buried in the ground of course) or other homemade pond area. Good luck with your new turtle :)

i have 4 of these little guys, ery hard to get hold of ( in the UK anyways). they are on CITES appendix 2.

i keep my young ones, they are about 5" long in a 5ftx2x2ft glass aquarium. they are box turtles but dont seem to follow the basic requirement of other american boxies....

they are mostly aquatic, treat them like you would any other turtle (i.e. RES ETC) BUT WITH SHALLOWER SLOWER MOVING WATER. they arnt great swimmers.

also onceu have sorted him otu with a nice viv, id recomend an enclosure about 6ftx2ftx2ft for a adult. i think u should try to find him a mate, they are an increasingly rare turtle and every effort should be made to breed them in captivity. iv been in contact with a zoo i did some work for who want my turtles when of breeding age.
good luck with frank.
