What kind of turtle am I?

I found this little turtle in the back yard and have spent hours online looking for a picture of one that looks like him. He is equally at ease in the water and on land. He is very curious and does not have a hinged bottom shell. I would really appreciate any advice or opinions ya’ll can send my way. Thanks!

Its hard to see the pic of the plastron - are you sure it doens’t have a hinge? It looks like a box turtle to me as well but they all do have a hinged shell. Where do you live? That may help you determine what kind it is if its wild. If it is wild re you putting it back or keeping it?

I dont see any hinge what so ever, its completely smooth. If she is a box turtle I will put her back where I found her. I live in SE Alabama and growing up we had a lot of box turtles around and they would all "box" up when approached. She seems to want to stay in the water and has no fear at all. If she was an aquatic turtle I would probably keep her but I need to know for sure. Do you know if they have the hinges from the start? Probably a stupid question but I dont know what to think. I dreamed about turtles last night...haha. Thanks for your interest.

Female eastern box turtle. My only reccomendation is to put her in an area free of roads, with a water source and lots of vegetation nearby.

Here ya go http://boxturtlesite.info/ant.html hatchlings do not have a hinge for the first year or two. So yes it is definately a box. I knew it was one but I also didn’t know they didn’t have a hinge that young, so that was confusing. I learn something new everyday :) If you let it go make sure its close to where you found it, if its a fairly safe area. They have a home range that they try to stay in. :)

Well I learned something new too. I put her back exactly where I found her and she seemed really pleased. She had a really cool way about her and maybe we will see her from time to time. Thanks so much for your help.

Because it was a wild turtle and should be release back into the wild to live. When you take a wild turlte you are not just taking one turtle you are also keeping it from breeding and making more turtles and their off spring making more and so on.....
But it depends on wether or not it is safe to release it back where it was found. Sometimes it is better to give them a home if its in the turtles best interest and the area is dangerous.
People can buy all kinds of captive bred turtles or rescue them off craigslist or from other places. In some places its against the law to take animals out of the wild where thye belong. Hopefully this answers your question :)

Well I grew up around here and there were turtles everywhere, now you hardly ever see them so I wanted her to maybe add to the population, also she was in a good area where I thought she would have a good shot at making it. I have two sliders that I adore and it was really hard to set her free but I felt it was for the best. I hope your turtle is feeling a lot better now!
