Can you tell me what kind of lights you have and what the temp is? What kind of thermometer do you have? Substrate? Pictures would help. go to this site and upload a pic to shrink it http://www.shrinkpictures. com/ (no spaces) then save it to your computer come back to this site and go to photo server to upload it to your profile. then here when your typing a message there is a tab at the bottom that says get your photo list. Yes they need a shallow water dish. A saucer for a plant pot works well and keep soaking everyday. No friut for Sulcatas, unless its a treat very rarely - but its not nessacary. Only feeding one kind of lettuce is not good. It also needs calcium. I’ll give you some websites with info for you to do some research but for now you can feed her grasses from your yard, grass hay and edible weeds such as dandelion, Mulberry leaves, hibiscus leaves and flowers (make sure they haven’t beed sparyed with chemicals), leafy greens such as watercress, endive, collards, turnip leaves, grape leaves, Spring mix but pick out the spinach it is very high in oxilic acid. Theres a few others not to feed so read the list on the web sites. No spaces. hope this helps for now. Oh and can you tell me how big she is - shell length? http://www.sulcata-station.org/basics.html http://africantortoise. com/sulcata .htm |

My scarrlett is about as big as the plam of my hand! I will be back home Monday and will upload the photos of the cages the lights and her! If I put her in a tub , how do I set up the lights? I live in califorina so I’m not sure about the weather here for her when she gets big! My ex just left me stuck with all the animals and I’m clueless .... She has a UVB light I think that’s what’s it’s called ! It’s suppose to be like the sun, so she get the sun on her! Then she has a heat bulb that is 25 watts to heat up her cage! I don’t have anything to check the temp of the cage! Will look for a water dish that I can put in there for her asap! She just had surgery for a colen prolaspse so she knocked out and will be for 96hrs;( if I have anyproblems getting the pic’s on here , on Monday I will let you know thank you, Turtle Hugs, STARR ;-) |

My substrate is organic soil with 30% or so of playsand mixed in and half of it is kept moist, and in the hide is moist. You can also use cypress muclh or playsand/coir brick. Yes the black dish was my water dish, I now have one a bit bigger. For lighting you can use a clip on lamp with a ceramic base for the light. You need a MVB light - its a heat/uvb light combo. You can order one on-line (i can give you a few links if you want them) or try the pet store, but the pet store will be more expensive. And you will need to buy a good thermometer, digital probe or lazer. California is perfect weather for having a tort outside so don’t worry about that. Lots of people have torts there. You can take yours outside for some real sun and that would be great. Even 20 min a day is helpful to them, but you do have to becareful if your yard has been sprayed. They will eat stuff so... you may have to wait awhile for it to leach out of the ground before letting her walk around. But you could use a large tote outside or build her an outdoor enclosure for during the day or while you are out there with her. When she is bigger you can use a large dog house or make a tort house that has a ceramic heat emitter for winter and a large heat mat if its needed. Depends on how cold it gets in the winter there, but you have a while. You can get the spring mix, bags of turnip greens, edible flowers and other greens at the grocery store by the salad. Grass Hay you can get at a feed store, she is small so she won’t eat a lot of it and it may take her awhile to like it. They may let you have a small bag full for free of the stuff that has fallen out of the bale. You can grind it up or cut it small and wet it a little before feeding it. You can order seeds on line to grow your own plants and weeds in planters. here is one website that a lot of people use for seeds and such (no spaces) http://www. carolinapetsupply .com/catalog/ |
